I used to go to summer camp at Koke'e when I was in junior high and high school. So beautiful up there. I loved hiking in the cool green forests, and swimming in the cold streams. Still my favorite island.

Hawai’i is all 808 area code, but recently they changed it so you have to use the area code even within Hawai’i. I think the plan is to eventually add another area code, probably for the outer islands.

Our kitchen phone was on a little built-in corner table with a shelf below for the phone book. On the wall was a large blackboard. Not only was it great for taking phone messages, it was a kind of bulletin board for the household.

I had a friend in L.A. in the 80s who knew every phone number she had ever called. You could ask her "what’s the number of that sushi place on Gower?" and she would know it. Scary.

My great grandparents also came from Ukraine. They dropped the "shanski" (various spellings) part of their name to sound more American, or less slavic.

It never occurs to him that someone would do something without getting paid. The idea that people would do this out of patriotism and a sense of duty to preserve democracy is beyond his grasp.

Portland had a Naked Bike Ride today, thousands of people (most not naked, it was cold and rainy). First, inflatable costumes and dancing, now this! The crime spree continues!

Scented soap should have a scratch-and-sniff label. Then I might not have 3 barely used bottles of hand soap in my bathroom.

My favorite hand soap, lemon cloudberry by Scent Theory, has been discontinued. I tried other scents but they’re all kind of nauseating. Now I have to search for something else. So annoying.
