I've never played it and love to. I like wooden ships.
but now the designer must design a compelling crime narrative, including false leads, for a player to puzzle out. Designing a crime investigation narrative will also be a challenging design task. [7/7]
A variation of the hidden object game is a crime scene game, where the player is looking for clues in a crime scene. If the crime scene puzzle is compelling enough, then perhaps there is not as much demand on the art. [6/7]
I ended up spending so much time in this one making the 3D scene, more time than I really wanted to spend, actually. [5/7]
Prior to finding Waldo, you're spending a lot of time just enjoying the art. Hidden object games thus need compelling art in order to be engaging, and that can take a very long time. [4/7]
The real challenge is art. These kinds of games are like "Where's Waldo," and part of the fun in that kind of game is looking over the scene and enjoying its complexity and local little narratives. [3/7]
This was a game where I explored what it would take to make a hidden object game, as that seemed like the kind of game a solo game developer could easily make. From a purely technical standpoint, that is true: I was done with game mechanics in just a few hours and ended up not using them all. [2/7]
This weekend was the Ludum Dare 58 game jam and I created a hidden object game called "Hidden Secrets." You can play it here: lnkd.in/eufw9nbR #gamejam @ludumdare.com #gamedesign [1/7]

I recorded a video discussing how to play the game, the game design process, and the process of making a version of the game in Godot. 2/3

Ambush from the Depths: Tutorial and reflection

Last year, I made a #wargame for @sebastianbae.bsky.social Indopacific microgames kit, Ambush from the Depths. I have now made a digital version of that game with @godotengine.org. I discovered unanticipated difficulties in turning board games into computer games, but learned from the experience.1/3
Experimented with geometry nodes in @blender3d.bsky.social . Here's a visualization of the casualties of the Titanic disaster. #dataviz
Making a #gamejam game about biscuit making made me want biscuits, so I quickly made some, even though it endangered my game's schedule. Guess I... risked it for the biscuit. 😀 @brackeys.com
Honestly, it's not that great; I spent a lot of time fighting technical challenges. I also was not a big fan of the game jam's theme. I at least get some joy out of running around in the scene I set up, and did learn more about character animation in the Godot game engine.
I made a game over last week for the @brackeys.com 2025.2 #gamejam. The theme was "Risk It for the Biscuit," so I made a 3D platformer where you play a Colonel Sanders character collecting biscuits while getting chased by angry chickens. I used @godotengine.org.

Not at all a fan of the theme for @brackeys.com game jam, but whatever, I'll make something. #gamejam #gamedev
I made everything (except the @godotengine.org game engine, of course) from scratch, and took maybe 20 hours total to make the game (which is not much). Some of the crashes got me laughing pretty hard, so I at least get some entertainment from it. [2/2]

For the #gmtk2025 #gamejam (theme: loop), I made a game where you drive a car around a track for as many laps as you can within the time limit. The problem is that the car is not very good and also crashes when you hit walls. And as you go around the track, the car gets more difficult to handle. I miss Hawaii and hope someday to return. I loved the National parks.
I also appreciated that the couple weeks I mentored him left an impact, and while his new project is fine enough, he at least misses what we were going to work on together.

I really appreciated that and it put me in a better mood overall. 4/4
But he came by my office yesterday and we caught up, and I really appreciated talking math with him. I've been trying to learn topology on my own, and he's a topologist, so I appreciated getting his thoughts on my exploration of his area of expertise. 3/4
It was for the best, since that had to happen for him to stay at IDA, but I was disappointed that I would not be able to continue the work we were doing; it's one of my all-time favorite projects I've worked on at IDA. 2/4
IDA experienced a significant disruption, and as a result, a Summer Associate I planned to work with had to be transferred to a different project over mine. 1/4
