Many of our fire cameras and seismic stations in remote locations use solar power and line-of-site microwave radio communication. For #FieldWorkFriday we have a picture from the team's upgrade of the solar panel frame at Sage Hen. See the camera feed at www.alertwildfire.org?currentFirec...

This week we deployed a mobile fire camera, with it's own solar power and satellite internet system, for a second view point of the Cottonwood Peak Fire. We call this a COW for "Communication on Wheels." The COW came to our lab on Wednesday, but it's on stand-by ready to be deployed again if needed.
Covered trailer with ladder next to it parked on a ridge with wildfire smoke in the background. A fire camera attached to the trailer can be see in the top left corner of the photo.

What does the magnitude 8.8 Russian earthquake look like on seismic stations here in Nevada? Here is a plot showing seismograms from several NV stations. The ground shook in Nevada for over 2 hours after the first P-waves arrived. More info on our Insta: tinyurl.com/jujbkvna

This massive earthquake, now reported at 8.8 has prompted a tsunami warning in Hawaii and western Alaska and tsunami watch or advisory along the west cost of the US and most of the Alaska coast. “Warning” means move inland! “Watch” means stay out of water and away from beaches.

Seismogram and map from Station Monitor showing vertical ground motion from the July 29, 2025 magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka. The seismogram was recorded at station R32K in Eaglecrest, Alaska, and marks the arrival of P waves, S waves, and surface waves. A yellow highlight shows the surface wave portion of the signal. The map below shows the path between the event epicenter off Kamchatka (marked “E”) and the station in Alaska (marked “S”), spanning 4003 km.
