Then the play goes on to its conclusion, the team running it wins the game, and the black hoodie person joins the winning team’s celebration, removes the mask to reveal themselves, only for one of the losing defenders to hit him with a gatorade cooler before running away to the locker room!

What if, instead of that, every sport was like the Harlem Globetrotters? Like at a football game, someone calls a time out then distracts the ref and everyone, and someone in a black mask and hoodie sneaks onto the field and lets out some air from the ball before the play starts?

And so, sports fandom ends up being about the numbers and stats, and brand loyalty becomes the artificial vehicle for storytelling. “We did good this year.” Or “maybe next year”

Sports are just games played for other people’s entertainment, but the arbitrary rules and boundaries are so strict so as to manufacture stakes. Ex. a basketball player can’t just run the ball down the court, they have to dribble. A football player can’t keep running the ball if the clock is stopped

Was talking to a friend trying to figure out why we don’t like sports, and we compared them to the only “real” sport, Pro Wrestling. We figured out it came down to storytelling: wrestling tells great stories with stakes, but other sports have to “fake it”

Had to pause listening to @melissacaruso.bsky.social’s Last Soul Among Wolves at work because the idea of someone smacking something that looks like this (in my mind anyway) with an oar, then scolding it like a naughty dog to get it to go away was just too freaking funny 🤣🤣
