Was having hard disk errors and squeaking sounds. Thought it was bad disks, so I swapped them. Same issue. Then I tried swapping the power supply with a much higher wattage model, and the disk issues went away. Don't skimp on the power supply!

Sometimes a motherboard's built-in SATA controller can't cope with RAID arrays. I was getting performance issues and VMs were acting funny. Logs were showing ATA errors. Connecting all drives to a SATA PCIe card resolved the issues.

Found a way to utilize the two remaining drives. Got a generic SATA controller PCIe card with ASMedia chipset from Amazon. Put the two remaining drives on it. Set up additional RAID 1 array with mdadm. It works.

I think I have the RAID array working. The array auto mounts at boot, and a test file I saved is readable. I think I'm ready to install VirtualBox next.
