Above all of those memories was the boy.

Floating trees and feather grass and swirling colors and the boy.

It was a simple world. Safe. Quiet and patient. The boy didn’t avoid him on bad days, just existed with kindness. Kept up with him on good days, as good as days could be back then. If Ed wanted to climb a tree, the boy followed, golden hair bouncing as he shifted from branch to branch. If Ed wanted to wade in the shallow stream, the boy hopped right in, hazel eyes sparkling with joyful mischief. They never spoke, but they never needed to. Ed always knew where to find him, and the boy always knew who Ed was. He watched Ed like Ed was interesting, like a curious mystery to solve, and Ed worried he might actually do it. Figure him out. Find his secrets. He felt too exposed sometimes. He didn’t feel exposed enough.
