Excavation trenches are open, volunteers have arrived, soil is being sieved, and school visits have begun at Castilly Henge #Cornwall.

We are excited to be collaborating with @Heritage_Trust & @cornwallarch.bsky.social at this fascinating site.

Colour photo showing a long narrow archaeological trench across the bank and ditch of Castilly henge. The raised bank is top left, dipping down into the ditch in the middle and back up the henge interior to bottom right. Two archaeologists wearing brightly coloured hi-vis clothes are working in the trench. One shovels soil into a wheel barrow, the other draws on the bank. A small hawthorn tree is in the middle of the photo, there is blue sky above.

On Monday after 10 years away I return to excavating #archaeology. Here’s a picture of a younger, hairier me digging in #Exeter in winter 1997/8

Colour photograph showing a person with their back to stading on moorland scrub looking out across a valley towards green pasture fields. The sky is bright blue and the far fields show remnants of prehistoric field banks within the modern plots. The person is wearing a pink coat, black trousers and a knited hat. They are holding a 1m red-and-white pole.

Exactly that. I find it disturbing but increasingly compelling. Normally scale of landscape features is my rapid way of filtering what’s anthropogenic and what’s topographic. That just doesn’t work here

A great day out and around Bodmin yesterday with the @landscapesurvey.bsky.social group. An extremely dynamic landscape with historic china clay extraction still drastically modifying the landscape today.
