It was about a month but we did other things too.

I'm guessing it was mandatory by the school curriculum but our teacher made it bearable
I'll also never forget my freshman year English teacher giving us Ethan Frome to read *in class together* specifically because it was a bad book.
I think some classics can still resonate with kids. I think that's the point of some of them being "classics."

But I agree they need recent stuff. One of the books that resonated with me in my High School required reading was called Whale Talk. It came out when I was 12.
