When POTUS is able to bypass Congress to pay the military he is entering Julius Caesar territory. When an army becomes loyal to a single pay master, disaster awaits. Thankfully, cowardly, morbidly obese Trump is no Caesar. But everyday the country slides further and further into the abyss.

As the police state configures itself, freedoms disappear. A government issued permit required to complete a hike. Non-citizens barred from the trail entirely. Passively accepting these restrictions leads to more, and bolder, diminutions of freedoms once taken for granted.

Trump might not have gotten the prize, but it went to a far-right Trump supporter who welcomes US military intervention in Venezuela and supports Trump's unlawful attacks on small boats in the Caribbean. It seems the Nobel Prize Committee was rattled by Trump's belligerent rhetoric.

A lesson here is elected Democrats should not engage with the Trump administration unless legally required to so engage. It's like dealing with Kim Jong Un. Every interaction with Trump (or Kim) is cast as a Trump (or Kim) victory and an admission that Democrats are liars. Don't fall into the trap.

Awarding the prize to Machado is almost like giving it to Trump by proxy. She is a Trump worshiper and supports his murderous attacks on boats. She is a right-wing conservative who Trump would be happy to see running Venezuela.

Troubled by how many imagine Machado is a great hero because she's not Trump. She's a hard right former coup sympathizer who calls for military intervention & destruction of socialism. Her opponent, Maduro, is an awful dictator. That doesn't make her a dream, anymore than not being named "Trump."
