Writing, drawing, and coloring the adventures of Solomon Kane -- living Sword of Vengeance who wanders a fantastical 16th century.
I am also writing stories for The Savage Sword of Conan magazine, published by Heroic and Titan comics.
I love making these stories.
Thank you for looking.

The 1970s second Ka-Zar run has everything I miss in comics and loved in childhood; alien invaders, flying sharks, green men, purple horses, priestesses and zombies, warriors riding bat-winged creatures, sabretooth tigers.
It's Ka-Zar by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard.

From an artist pov, Kamandi would be fun to draw.
patrickzircher.bsky.social
:)
That explains a lot. There's a lot of Planet of the Apes in Kamandi.

Even 'good news' is greeted like this now.
patrickzircher.bsky.social
I know what you mean-- and I rarely bought it myself. I preferred Killraven, Deathlok, 'serious' dystopian futures :)

But it was an era when kids read comics. A kid sees themself in Kamandi-- as opposed to The Demon, New Gods, Omac, the Eternals.
It also has a strong sense of wonder and fantasy.
patrickzircher.bsky.social
I hope it's something like that.

A copy of Strunk & White would have changed comics :)
patrickzircher.bsky.social
Okay, I would have changed the 2nd one too.
This is why writers revise, and why there's strength in being direct. When that was written there was little or no time for the writer to revise.

"Besides, I made a vow to your wife, the Lady Annia--

-- and however barbarous I may be, I keep my vows!"

Gorgeous Gil Kane drawing, by the way.

If the first voice-over narration box had simply been:
"Besides, I made a vow to your wife, the Lady Annia--

it would be fine.

You can't give a peace prize to someone you suspect is always motivated by a profit, a deal. Everything he does, I wonder what's in it for him. Because that's his character, that's who he's shown everyone he is.

Fantasy is Hamlet, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
It's Paradise Lost, The Odyssey, and the Divine Comedy.
It's Orlando, The Master and Margarita, One Hundred Years of Solitude, & Pedro Paramo.
It's Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
It doesn't have a ceiling or a limit.

On quality, I just want to make the best comics I can AND enjoy myself. I want to make comics like the stories I most admire by others.
That hasn't led to forgoing fantasy for Lit (yet, anyway) because reading satisfies that desire.
And fantasy can be meaningful (Le Guin, Tanith, Bradbury).

Wonderful article.
I'm glad Katherine wrote it. Thank you for sharing it, Mike.
I can't stand to stop working & have drawn through shaking fevers, wrapped in a blanket.
Not doing it, or being able to, is my fear. Passivity makes me uncomfortable. Working makes me whole.
May she be in writers heaven.

I would expect you more to write a piece like this one funny, thoughtful one. A friend was dying of cancer and still figuring out how and why to work. The cancer killed her, but she kept working right up until the end. And she even attempted to justify not working! therumpus.net/2018/11/06/w...

Do I want to live, or do I want to write? Sometimes I think it’s that simple.

If I ever write a think piece about not working, not trying--making an attempt to justify that-- slap me.

Latest read, 62 poems and 2 essays by Edgar Allan Poe. The first essay is on Cryptology, the second is his novel-length essay Eureka, on God, matter, and the universe.
Poe said Eureka was his magnum opus & more important than Newton's theory of gravity.
Y'know, he really was a little crazy.
