It makes things very confusing, so in many cases I guess we have to apply our own restrictions on what we submit.

But the one that I’m struggling with is what do we do about mixtapes? Many rap & R&B performers issue these before albums

Eg, is Frank Ocean’s debut Nostalgia, Ultra. or channelORANGE?
#5debutalbums1014

Once we get into the 21st century it gets a bit tricky to determine what a debut album is. In hip hop you get a stack of different rapper/producer pairings, each of whom could lay claim to umpteen ‘debut’ albums.

And then there are those who record under umpteen different names…
Been working my way through these. I know The Prisoners and New Musik, and The Action and The Creation I know a bit. The others are new to me though.

But I just wanted to say that Tony Bastable V John Noakes is a great name for a track! I’m siding with John Noakes, although I preferred Magpie!

#12inchTuesday

Sodding heck. I remembered it was Tuesday when I was at the cinema, watching a rubbish rom-com that my daughter wanted to see. So a bit later than planned, here’s part 3 of my 80s theme, 20 favourite 80s 12” Singles. Well, sort of favourites anyway.
It’s 1:30 and I should be in bed, but I’ve just listened to these. Nightmares tonight then!

I like Paul Jones. Couldn’t call myself a fan, but he seems like a good bloke, has a great voice, Cliff’s anti-ageing gene and a good taste in music, but crikey, he and producer Tim Rice should know better!
Ghostpoet is one of the most consistent artists there is, or ever has been. Every single album he’s made has been excellent. And to think he quit the business and opened a cafe, whilst far lesser artists are selling out stadiums. There’s no justice in popular music!
Last week I repaid the favour, as I bought a Japanese copy of the LP, completely forgetting I already owned it, so almost 40 years later I’ve given him a copy of the LP that he hid at the back of a rack for me. Brilliant album too. Why wasn’t Julie Christie a big hit, and yet The Lady in Red was?!?
Actually, back in the pre-internet days, when I have no idea how we ever found anything out, Jimmy Viz went into town at lunch and back at the 6th form told me Duffy had a second album out, Because We Love You, and which shop I could find it in. I bought it straight after college ended…
That’s the Dixie version. How many other popsters of the mid-80s would have even considered anything like that? But it’s utterly brilliant.

There’s a lot of love for The Lilac Time, and rightly so, but Duffy’s pre-Lilacs stuff is where I first fell in love with his music and I love it still.
Finding new music is one of the main reasons I signed up to Twitter (and then BlueSky when I had got fed up with all the horrid stuff on Twitter). My favourite album is The Man-Machine, but I’m always thinking ‘perhaps it’s not, and I just haven’t heard my favourite album yet’. A neverending search!
Yep, I like it! Downloaded Five Good Evils. You can definitely hear their influences. I imagine they had a copy of the Nuggets compilation before they made this.
Thanks Richard.

A couple I decided not to vote for made it safely, as I thought, but my votes couldn’t quite get Frankie GTH or Mission of Burma through, so I’m off to sulk for a bit!
Dismal doesn’t do it justice. We were rubbish second half.
Yes, that’s exactly where I first came across them, at Sheffield City Hall
Can’t wait to hear it, but unfortunately I’m having to. As soon as I flog some of my stuff on eBay it’s top of my shopping list.
I imagine the songwriters were pleased with this!
Great selection, including 5 of my favourite songs - Arthur’s Theme, Put the Message in the Box, Everybody’s Got To Learn sometime, and 2 of my favourite songs from my 4th favourite album - All the World Loves Lovers on the A side and Machine Gun Ibiza on the B side. What a single!
I love his version of Under the Boardwalk and bought the single especially because of that
One of my favourite bands back in the day.

16 favourite 80s B-Sides, the names of which are in the alt. text.

I had to use the 12” for some of them, because the one by The Dream Academy is only on the 12”. It’s a superior version (according to me!) of one of their best album tracks.
Wow! That’s some collection.
Mmm, should have waited and taken the photos in daylight.

I was taking the last photo for tomorrow earlier, but then went on to photo my 12” singles for Tuesday (that turned into a palaver!) and I pulled out a single I should have included with my favourite 80s singles, so here it is. I only have this on 12”, hence missing it out.
It is annoying when spell check does that, isn’t it. I can’t feel my hands so often dictate texts. It tends to have trouble with Yorkshire accents though, so you should see some of the stuff it thinks I’ve said!

But thanks for the recommendation. Sounds interesting.
Fantastic band. I’ve seen them live 4-5 times and it’s always a good night. Unfortunately they were mine and my ex’s band, so I don’t think I’d go and watch them again, but if you’ve never seen them play I’d recommend it. They even wheeled Wreckless Eric out to do a number with them one time.
