One of those days when air sinks/ warms adiabatically under the influence of high pressure, creating an inversion..rise in temp with height

Cloud trapped under the inversion giving a chilly day some low lying parts

Places in/above the inversion, eg hills, seeing warm sunshine

High pressure dominating

Nice capture of the high pressure subsidence inversion by @ldscwebcam on X earlier

Shows the haze and subsequent low cloud ☁️ that formed in the relatively more moist and unstable lower portion of the atmosphere just below it

The warming/drying influence of the sun now clearing it

A good time for checking those barometers with high pressure in charge

Mean sea level pressure around 1032/1033mb for most

A trend towards a -NAO North Atlantic Oscillation..a relative increase in pressure around Iceland &/or decrease in pressure around the Azores symptomatic of the blocking high pressure cell located near the UK..effectively suppressing Atlantic driven W'ly airstreams for now

If at first you don't succeed

High pressure is trying to settle the weather down and has had a good attempt across the S of the UK

As expected though it's through the second half of the week and into the weekend that a more successful wider spread effort takes place for the UK

High pressure will build across the UK this week, eventually providing many of us with calm conditions

But calm doesn't automatically mean sunny, as there could often be large amounts of cloud around ☁️

Contrails are a naturally occurring phenomena of course, and have been since the invention of aircraft

During wartime military aircraft pilots have even used them to mask their bombing attacks..as in 1944 below..
