I'm so bad at assuming that certain things are just common knowledge until I'm reminded that American history \ american immigrant history \ Louisiana history isn't everyone's hyperfocus lol
I came to the realization today that not everyone knows the US has had a president whose first language wasn't english but whose family had been in the US 200 years when he became President.

Van Buren.
Did that help? Sure. But I also know it doesn't happen w/out the diplomatic crisis. It was political as shit w/ Harrison trying to get elected 3 weeks later & was trying to use it to get votes. Without the anniversary there still would've been a day we just may have gotten a better representative.
1892 was the year after the lynchings in 1891. It was also the year that Columbus Day was implemented as a response to the lynchings.
Its wholly unfair to say they embraced columbus when nobody was talking about him at all much less talking about the atrocities he committed in 1892.
That's fair. Create a holiday for him then. Columbus day was never meant to be abt Columbus & people have forgotten what it was about. I had Sicilian family in NO at the time. The whole structure was supposed to be a fight against Xenophobia and its literally been allowed to become the opposite.
Fuck Columbus but also, for left leaning folks of Italian Am. descent, esp. those of us who know the story & had family in New Orleans in 1891 the entire country overlooking the day being a response to the US' xenophobic stance on Italian Americans in the late 19th century is frustrating as hell.
We hold the history that people like you don't gaf about.
Just say you like being ignorant and save everyone the time.
Its not abt Columbus. Give me Yogi Berra or Chef Boyardee or Frank Sinatra or Joe Pesci or Robert DeNiro day. I don't particularly care, just give the meaning back and stop talking about Columbus. And if that means the day finds its way into obscurity? Fine. Better than the politicization of it now.
It was supposed to be an apology to Italy w/ a $25k payment. Instead, a grassroots effort was est. & the day made federal in '71. If your family was from NO & have the names Macheca, Marchesi, Bagnetto, Caruso, Comitis, Geraci, Romero, Scaffidi, Traina, Monasterio, or Polizzi you're likely connected
Columbus day was supposed to be a one time event but Italian Americans liked having a day to rally around. All of the statues were put up by Italian American societies to fight against the Xenophobia & the proliferation of mafia rumors being spread aimed @ Sicilian communities.
Columbus. He was never supposed to be given a day. Italian Americans were given a day because of the mass lynching of Sicilians in New Orleans. They were given a day because it was a major diplomatic crisis b/w the US and Italy. 3 of the 11 killed were Italians. All were of Italian descent.
And for anyone that's missed this episode, the Canterbury Church is doing an art installation where they've put up "graffiti" in the form of removable stickers.

The fuckery and audacity of these people. FAUX OUTRAGE.
JFC. These people don't even know about the Church of England?
Imagine believing immigrants weren't involved in the early space program .....
Once upon a time there was a woman, Sylvia Landry from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who started a prostitution racket that also worked in DC. Officially, she committed suicide. Yeah, this is totally not about Epstein. bayoujustice.com/2024/01/bato...
Baton Rouge Madam’s death: suicide or murder?
In 1995, long before we knew the name Jeffrey Epstein, the trial, imprisonment, escape, and suicide of a woman newspapers called “The Baton Rouge Madam” made national news.

Just a heads up if anyone tries to "remind" you.... Roseanne was fired under Trump.
While I recognize the nat'l media landscape shit is important so is the 7th congressional election that started 9/17. We need to be shining the light on candidates who are against everything being done right now to raise candidates name ID before Dec. @thetnholler.bsky.social @tennesseelookout.com
My Southern dad who voted for Trump 3x who is completely secure financially just sent me this.... You know what I didn't have on my bingo card for this year? YouTube beginning the process of pulling him back to the center. youtube.com/shorts/BJ5qf...

Maybe I'm wrong and overreacting. I thought moving to TN would improve it but the last two summers have proven me wrong - I still have family to worry about and can't unplug completely. At least there's nothing (much) in the atlantic/gulf this year.
It feels like we've mostly slowed the yearly 9/11 discussion. Will we EVER stop with yearly documentaries? Can we just .... not? I know it doesn't help that its also my birthday week but JFC am I done. Will we always talk about it among ourselves? Yes. But it's our conversation to have. Not MSM.
