The act of joy that is watching the installation of a speed table on a collector road in the heart of Petworth (Illinois Ave. NW)! Perfect timing ahead of the total revamp of Grant Circle over the next year! @petworthsafersts.bsky.social

At Taylor and Arkansas the sidewalk ends. No ramps. No signage. We just decided it isn't important to prioritize sidewalks as the DC-managed land connects to the NPS land.

Another neighbor was hit by a driver this morning in Grant Circle. Safety fixes are approved but now wait for resources. The majority of the project has been delayed to Spring 2026.

When DDOT approves traffic safety issues that require electrical work, such as the light at Taylor and NH NW, @pepcoconnect.bsky.social can often delay these fixes for months+. These delays mean numerous avoidable crashes and injuries continue. We need a better way to compel PEPCO to act faster.

Something that often gets overlooked in community discussions about street safety improvements is the role safer streets play in helping inequity issues. If we talk about dangerous driver behavior towards women, bike lanes are more than just recreational activity.

Screenshot of text that says: "Of course, safety concerns impact all genders, but research has found that women are more risk-averse in their decision of whether to bike. They have a right to be worried, according to Laura Fox, the former general manager of Citi Bike, the nation’s largest bike share program: One study showed that drivers are three times more likely to encroach on a female cyclist’s space than a male’s."

DDOT just announced the Grant Circle safety improvements are in final design and confirmed they are happening!

"Construction is anticipated to begin in August 2025 and is expected to take approximately 6-8 months, weather permitting."

@ddotdc.bsky.social had positioned school crossing guards here to help families cross. Due to issues such as low pay and short hours staffing has been an issue and no crossing guards have been here for several weeks. DC could fund street safety this budget cycle if they believe it is a priority.

We know how to make New Hampshire safer but the District has tabled any plans that would slow drivers down here believing violent drivers will react negatively if they can't quickly drive through our neighborhood. We need to rethink our priorities.

Also within the past few days, one block south on NH another driver lost control of their car and destroyed a parking sign after coming over the curb and onto the sidewalk.

In the past few days there have been two significant crashes at 4th and New Hampshire. In one a driver went over the pedestrian island, that itself was a partial fix to try and make this crossing safer. Families use this crosswalk to try to cross NH for several routes to schools.

Please take a moment to send an email to DDOT telling them you support the proposed safety improvements at Grant Circle. A quick email saying how you use the circle and your support would help. Email is in the link below:

Second, DDOT is looking to install a traffic signal at New Hampshire, Quincy, and 8th right by the Metro station. This notorious intersection tends to be one of the most dangerous.

Send an email in support before April 21. Email and details can be found here: ddotwiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/...
