I've found brown & black hairstreak eggs yesterday in the #Argonne, in the N of France, near where we are staying for a week. Today I had some time to make pictures of the #brownhairstreak eggs. Can you find hibernating #butterflies near you?

A new study has revealed that even modest levels of road traffic across Iceland's lowlands can significantly reduce the abundance of breeding birds, including globally important populations of waders:
Small roads, big impacts: breeding birds fall by 20% near Icelandic thoroughfares
New research reveals that low-traffic roads in Iceland reduce breeding bird abundance by up to 20% within 200 m of the road edge, with Whimbrel, Golden Plover, Dunlin and Meadow Pipit being the most-affected species.

Making these kind of large impact conclusions based on limited samples can lead to lots of confusion for the less scientific butterfly lovers & other naturalists. See the Eurema saga where old world Eurema were placed in Terias only to be reinstated 2y later when the group was more thorougly studied

Apart from this paper, I'm also not a fan of other papers of the same group where they completely reshape #butterfly nomenclature based almost only on genetic distances while largely ignoring morphology and life history, fe with Nymphalis here pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Well, when you describe 300 species in one paper, I guess the inspiration for an original new name sometimes escapes you... But you could ofcourse always try to choose a name that will less likely lead to confusion...

I have two Pieter. S . Bavius in Macedonia was a thrill and , coincidentally, alongside A . Gruneri. The sheer number and variety at this site was astonishing. But seeing a completely red species in Ghana took some beating. I believe this is C . Mabillei. It was one of many memorable species there.

Anthocharis gruneri was the last European species of #orangetip I hadn't seen, so I was very glad to find a few this spring in the very S of the Peloponnese. Check the pale sulphur color of the frontwingbase.

What species of #worldwidebutterflies brightened your year?

The Royal Assyrian, Terinos terpander

Widespread from the S of Vietnam to Sumatra & Borneo but most common in the Malaysian peninsula and that's where I took this picture.
