Everyone assumed hed have his ashes on him since hes so absurdly good at pvp that would basically make him immortal, so when he died protecting xl n all his items got burned ppl assumed that was the end (you cant put ashes in an enderchest the plugins wont allow it so theres some amount of fairness)

i think that gods and ghosts can actually work rly well for mc server lore death mechanics too
like if all of someone's builds (temples) are destroyed they get put in hardcore mode while ghosts have like, some lore significant item where if its destroyed they're perma banned
