Tropaeolum smithii is back after we lost it a couple of years ago. This year's seedlings flowering in the seed frame since it got too hot and dry to prick them out in the summer...

I admit to always being somewhat underwhelmed by this Malus transitoria with its small yellow fruit that go brown so fast but it is doing well this year.

My first Cyclamen cyprium grown from seed to flower. It might not look much but it's the first time I've had any luck with this species. It's super sweetly scented too!

First daffodil of the season! Narcissus 'Cedric Morris' is meant to flower this side of Christmas but I think it's early even for this variety this year.

Sorry none to spare this year.

Some other plants from my trip at the start of the week:

Morina longifolia - I don't think this likes East Anglian hot summers.

Xanthoriza simplicissima - amazing autumn colour, must try this again.

Heuchera villosa 'Autumn Bride' giving a good contrast with the hedge in low sun.

A few days away to give a talk and the chance to see other gardens and nurseries. More photos to come but to start, Parottia persica looking fiery at Belsay Hall.
Although we sold out ages ago Bidens aurea is still flowering its heart out and will continue until we get an actual frost. Will try and pot more next year!

So many customers have commented on (and asked for) this Molinia seedling that we'll be starting to trial and propagate it in the spring.

Not bad for the end of October. Open today and then next Thursday and Friday, 9.30am to 5pm. Then we are mail order only until the beginning of March next year.

Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails' still looking good and should do for a while yet. A really good value grass for the garden as long as it has sun and a drained soil.

One of those plants I call a "survivor", we've had Aconitum uchiyamae for 26 years and still only two plants. Every time we get it bulked up, it collapses and most of it dies again. I think we sold about 5 plants one year! Still, it's producing loads of flower this autumn...

That's a constant problem here too. Most are too airy to photograph the whole plant well so I finish up with lots of close ups!
Panicum virgatum 'Dallas Blues' showing some good late flower this year. Relatively broad blue-grey leaves on an upright plant to 1.5-1.8m.

Fountains of grasses under a leaden October sky.

Always good for its seedheads - Doellingeria umbellata. This season some pants still have flowers on while others are in full seedhead mode. Long lasting winter structure.

Most of the Hardy Chrysanthemum are starting to flower now and 'Old Norwell' is the first outside this season. As the flowers age they fade to a softer shade.

I suspect I post Vincetoxicum hirundinaria too often but it does earn its keep in the garden. October sees this glorious golden yellow foliage before the leaves drop.

Thalictrum lucidum putting on some good autumn colour this year. A plant that looks good for a really long season.

Impatiens P1961 seems to be doing well this year with the steady autumn weather.

Well this is different! Not sure about the extra lobes but the pattern is strong.

From seed meant to be Cyclamen hederifolium hybrids but with what I don't know.

Too many aster photos recently? Here's some propagation instead: old rhizomes of Bistorta amplexicalis 'Dikke Floskes' that would normally be discarded.

They can shoot quickly in a dark, damp place for a couple of weeks, while it's warm. They are now cut into sections in 9cm pots.

If you need waking up on a Sunday morning! Symphyotrichum novae-angliae 'Brockamin'

#gardening
Symphyotrichum 'Blue Heaven' is a great plant with a bushy habit and lots of flowers from low down to the top, but I can't see much difference when it's next to the popular 'Little Carlow'!

Both for sale at the moment so you can make your own mind up!

#gardening
I think this might be my favourite stage of Symphyotrichum x amethystinum 'Freiburg'. When the first few flowers are open it has this amazing promise for so late in the year.

Tall and airy with small leaves.

I've been asked a few times lately what the difference is between Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' (top) and 'Carine'. You can hopefully see 'Carine' is a paler creamy yellow but there isn't much in it. I think the stems are more red in average too.
