New thing! @jrcpl.us and I have been exploring home-made software. We made a prototype of a tool for making scrappy little apps for you and your friends.

i made a lil app for printing a QR code that lets guests easily get on your wifi. put it on your fridge or wall.

yes, there are already pages that do this, but i think mine looks better. enjoy

Gives a whole new meaning to “personal software.” Scrappy, by @jrcpl.us and Pontus Granström, is a research prototype that helps you make software for just you and your friends. Hat tip: @scripting.com.

haha yep i had the same thought when trying out your scrapp.

we have a design that solves this, but haven't implemented it yet. it's high on the list of obvious shortcomings, and your feedback makes me wanna fix it :)
the browser tab will now have the name of the scrapp instead of just "Scrappy"
very nice! may i put this in the Scrappy gallery?

Great app! I implemented this simple aspect ratio calculator - scrappy.jrcpl.us/s/dd73bf9f-d...

panning the canvas with two fingers on a trackpad will no longer trigger chrome's swipe-to-go-back gesture.
hahaha

that's super helpful actually. thanks!

iCloud passwords is what i rely on (even though having to input the stupid 2FA code every time i restart my computer has gotten old fast)
they are still supporting it with bug-fixes and chromium updates, right? i don't really feel a need for more features. i suspect i'll end up with zen for snappiness and arc for my chromium needs

please let me know how you find zen!
maybe there's a really good, hidden reason they don't
scrapps open visible at the center of the screen.

before they could sometimes open at the edge of the viewport, which was confusing.
a bar at the top that lets you navigate to your list of scrapps, rename your scrapp, and share your creation more easily.

(note to self: next time you launch something, make sure there's a prominent share button from the start)
basic touchscreen support! You can now pan and zoom and tap buttons on your phone or tablet.

many scrapps make the most sense on a phone, so Scrappy felt incomplete without at least basic support.
it's been great to see so much support for Scrappy! ❤️

we intended to take a break from the project after launching it last week, but i got a boost of motivation to fix some low-hanging fruit that have been nagging me.

i'll list what's new in this thread. go to scrappy.jrcpl.us to try for yourself!

we'll be sharing more in the coming days. anything in particular you'd like to see?
that's all @jrcpl.us! it's cute isn't it
would love to see your ideas!

and thanks, it's really helpful to learn what you are missing :)

Maybe it's just the people I tend to follow, but I'm seeing more and more projects wanting to give people a way out of the big tech silos. DIY apps, servers (like my project dropserver.org) etc...
can't wait to see what you make!
Excellent scrapp.

Please don’t redesign it. I love the DIY look.

We believe that a prototype is worth more than a thousand mockups, so not only can you read about Scrappy — you can try it yourself!

Read more here, try it, and please share any thoughts or scrapps you make with us :)

We've been driven by

- a wish to democratize computing, which Hypercard promised but never realized

- a curiosity about how modern canvas UI, realtime collaboration, and effortless link sharing changes that promise

- a frustration with the incredible complexity of the modern software stack
