Communications Chemistry, Published online: 30 October 2025; doi:10.1038/s42004-025-01752-3The evolutionary role of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in cofactors like NAD remains poorly understood. Here, the authors reveal that the AMP moiety protects NAD from overreduction in hydrothermal and mineral-based environments, suggesting its ancient function predates enzymatic activity.

Last week my first PhD student (and first Postdoc to be) defended her thesis and passed with flying colors. Congrats, Dr. Delfina Pereira!!! What was even more beautiful than her kicking ass: her Portuguese family being there and bursting with pride for 'the first doctor of the village' ❤️
