Lazarus, Home from the War is out today! An ex-pilot with PTSD meets a Jewish neurologist who can't help him. I am now open for cross-examination.

A stack of books in front of a green and orange, somewhat floral fabric. There's an orange next to the books and an orange on the top of the stack. The book facing us is Lazarus, Home from the War, and it's sitting on Dionysus in Wisconsin (labeled "book 1"), Old Time Religion ("book 2"), and Troth ("book 3"). The words "Now Available!" have an arrow pointing to the Lazarus book.

My day job is computer, so I know just enough to be dangerous.

Mostly I'm trying to come up with a way to let a sick kid watch My Neighbor Totoro without having to give them access to my good laptop.

The terrible jolt of moving from a nearly done, ready for editing manuscript to one that is still going through a second draft.

Well not the first first time but you know what I mean.

Someone told me (I hope wrongly) that the hippie co-op I used to live in got rid of its clothing-optional policy. This is like the first time I've really felt real life becoming more puritanical and I don't like it.

Honestly, their update started breaking my old laptop and I had to upgrade. Was hoping they'd just stop pushing updates so I could repurpose it for my kids to watch videos on. It's probably better for people generally if they extend, but I guess I'll reformat and go to Mint or something.

My most unhinged literary opinion:

The first line, delivered just before the curtain rises on act 1, scene 1 of Hamlet, should be "knock, knock."

I think you are right though.

Also it is generally a lot easier to explain what doesn't work about a sex scene than it is to explain how to write a good one. I think that is why we resort to rules that seem on the face to make sense, but when you delve deeper they start to fall apart.

The last time we were in France we went to Mont St Michel and it was so cool! (That was the trip where I discovered how to rent a car in France but not how to put gas in it. I think we could buy gas now though—American cards have chips now, which was the hindrance before.)

Really? Do you think they'd be willing to look at a few lines of dialog for me?

You don't speak any Breton, do you?
pretensesoup.bsky.social
I have never been, but I've read so much about it I would like to go now.

An interesting question. I've been working on a project set in France. So I was looking at a map of the area around Carnac and found this notation. (Google Maps maybe labels it as "les 2 cheminées" instead, or it might be "les deux frères.")
A map of a region slightly northeast of Carnac-Plage on the Bay of Quiberon. A little tower icon with the label "Ancien four à goémon" is circled in red.

Nice.

(Have I been watching this for a while as it crept closer? Yes.)

Living so far from the ocean, I am unable to appreciate the nuances of seaweed typology I fear.

I get lazy because making the à is tricky on a English keyboard. But you're right, "four à goémon," I think. "Kelp kiln" or "kelp oven"?

I cannot emphasize enough that if you speak to me in French I will sound like I am five. I don't remember how to conjugate verbs. I sometimes refer to myself in the second person accidentally. But I can read it decently, if very literally.

I started learning French when I was about 12, and having been immersed in French documents for the last week (wikipedia, various travel guides) I'm forgetting that it's a real language that not everyone speaks.

Then I run into a phrase like "four a goemon" and my brain goes "wait, what?"

Ah, a day off with childcare. Seems like a perfect time to...make a really long to-do list and then accomplish one to two items on it.

I have been forcibly removing myself from social media when that happens. (Which is daily, but sometimes I make it until late afternoon.)

Did you really think you were gonna raise kids who didn't make fun of their parents' music?

Me: you know, for a minute there...

Me: maybe I will go for a walk and not come home. I will walk into the ocean and become a sea creature.

8yo: no, you'll (sings) drive [your] car into the oceannnnn.

I don't totally understand why he finds the Pixies so funny, but there you go.

Forgot to post this last week, but if you want to hear me reading part of the top secret project (and mispronouncing both French and Breton), you can find the recording here: youtu.be/Bwv6CLImf3U?...

I've set it to start at my bit, but you should go check out the other readers, too. 😁

Honestly, sounds exhausting. I direct enough stuff when I'm awake.

If you're like "how does THAT happen?" The choices that lead to fifteen miles don't happen at mile fourteen. They happen at mile 6, when you're still having fun but your ability to count is decreased.

Me this morning, trying to figure out the route Sam is running: oh, that's too far. No one spontaneously runs 15 miles for fun.

Also me: spontaneously runs 15 miles for fun.

I should doubt my plots less.
