At Progress Michigan, we are mourning the lives lost over the weekend in Grand Blanc in a senseless act of gun violence at a church.

We stand with community members whose heroism saved lives and call for more action to stop these kinds of attacks that are becoming too prevalent.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the shooting in Grand Blanc last weekend. Whatever religion you practice, we all deserve safe communities and the freedom to attend places of worship without fear of violence

We're not sure what the budget deals we're hearing about will mean for us. One thing we do know is that we wouldn't be in this situation, with lawmakers scrambling to to avoid a government shutdown, if it weren't for Matt Hall's clownery and failure to pass a budget on time.

Just a few friendly reminders for anyone who needs them about handling breaking news situations without spreading or falling for misinformation.

Breaking news consumer's handbook:
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information
4. There's almost never a second shooter
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And the photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.
