Souls games kind of figured it out, there has to be a lot of design scaffolding for it to work
They soft-cap hoarding with levelling, let you teleport back, rings of sacrifice, etc

His abilities all synergize with each other in both obvious and subtle ways, and his ult has a lot of mind games (do you save some mobility/stamina for it or try to avoid him altogether, complex target picking, the "stun", etc)
