I love word etemology. Here’s pumpernickel. The word "pumpernickel" is of Germanic origin and is thought to refer to a farting demon:
Pumper: A German word meaning "flatulence"
Nickel: A form of the name "Nicholas," which in older Germanic dialects was associated with demons or goblins -
