personally i think a part of her grew to resent curly too because he ultimately is jimmy's enabler & failed her horribly, which is why she had no second thoughts taking her life in front of curly

also there's only 5 ppl on the ship & she reached out to him because he's the captain. prior to the assault she was warm & showed concern cuz she's the nurse & counselor.

women acting nice & friendly to men =/= liking them. esp if it's a man of authority.

she respects him as captain & her attempt at reaching out to him for help & understanding (dead pixel convo) might show a level of trust but that quickly wanes by the time we reach the part where she says she doesn't trust us to give her a means her protect herself (the gun)

#mouthwashing related: i don't see any evidence for Anya having a soft spot for Curly & that being the reason for her distress at administering drugs to Curly. i think the reason's much simpler: it triggers her own trauma

where everyone else around you seems like they're gaslighting you by denying (your) reality or making you feel insane or threatened by withholding some esoteric knowledge or ancient cosmic secret from you. all the while knowing you can't escape what's coming.

has to involve some form of alienation. the acquisition of forbidden knowledge often through some horrific act of cultural or moral transgression in a collectivist often insular society where you end up as a social pariah/intrude as outsider where you're pushed into a corner of intellectual doom

the theme of being insignificant in the grand scheme of the universe is not what makes cosmic horror scary to me since it's an abrahamic notion that humans are super special born with a special purpose (man is god's greatest creation & animals are simply first drafts etc) to me a good cosmic horror
