It's the Smart Thing to do and gets the audience to root even harder for the Marines when it's "Game over, man." Because they _didn't_ bring that on themselves.

Given his unreal abilities to write hard SF or Fantasy equally well, & maintain quality while producing quantity, I'm pretty much convinced that "Adrian Tchaikovsky" is actually three authors in a trench coat. :)

The only reason I haven't read all of his stuff is that I save it for reading slumps.

With:
✅ Interesting characters
✅ Great pacing
✅ Technology based on botanical bioengineering
✅ A tight plot
✅ Clues in plain sight
✅ Brilliant/quirky detective
✅ ...and her put upon assistant, who remembers everything.
