Going to be playtesting the new, slimmed-down version of my card game Squatches and Scotches today. The redesign is courtesy of a collaboration with my co-designer, Ellen, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays!

The Player-Shaped Hole (@ayshaufarah.bsky.social @geoffgander.bsky.social & Kim McCarthy)
Coined by @rdansky.bsky.social it refers to writing a narrative inclusive of player agency, rather trad novel or script. Must there always be a player-shaped hole? How can this be adapted to other forms?

Going to be doing super secret narrative things tomorrow and Saturday.

If You Know, You Know.

No, that was the reading back on October 2.

So, next weekend, this is a thing....

Things I did not see at the Steven Wilson show tonight:

People talking over the music
Cell phones
Someone in the front row trying to engage the performer in personal conversation.

Thing I did see:

An amazing concert performed by incredible musicians. Probably a top 10 all time show for me.

Off to go see Steven Wilson, which is basically like entering the prog rock multiverse to go watch Loki play guitar.

My calendar for the rest of the month is, frankly, terrifying.
Which makes sense, me being a horror writer and all and it being October.
But still...

The tracks, they were fine with. The nose hair samples, however....

Finished a rewrite on an older novel manuscript tonight, then ritually intoned the words "Fuck you, Annie Dillard."

Gotta admit, it felt good.

Yeah, got accused by multiple folks of faking a collector's item, which, needless to say, I have neither the time, the interest, or the expertise to do.

Always thrilled when complete strangers accuse me of perpetrating a fraud for the sake of a couple of bucks.

I would like to thank my niece Paige for imparting to me the secret wisdom of the Ninja Creami ice cream maker in my kitchen, which has mocked me for so very long.

Real Bigfoots are smart enough to want nothing to do with people (unless you believe David Paulides, which is a bad idea.)

Movie Bigfoots, on the other hand...

And the dinosaurs largely get blown up or eaten or shot or covered in lava.

I'm thinking Bigfoot is way smarter.
rdansky.bsky.social
Bigfoot frankly has better narrative logic than those movies do.

Honestly, I could do with less convoluted nonsense around the dino snacking. "So they swam off the island which was an entirely different island but now there's a giant herd of an entirely different species in Canada and...."

*sigh*

I'd argue they've basically become figure skating competitions - the audience is there to watch for creativity and degree of technical difficulty.
rdansky.bsky.social
I think at this point we can all agree the Jurassic Park movies are just big budget slasher films where the whole point is watching people get creatively eaten.

It's about removing plausible deniability....
