Happy to share our new publication examining heroin use symptoms using network analysis with @renefreichel.bsky.social &
@reinoutwiers.bsky.social! Sleep problems emerged as most central, with craving and loss of control linked to specific withdrawal symptoms.

4️⃣💡 The occurrence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors is best predicted using constructs from several different theories of suicide. Future theoretical and empirical work should integrate these components. Many thanks to my collaborators Brian O'Shea and Matt Nock!

3️⃣ Key Findings

🔹 Lack of belonging → most predictive of suicidal ideation

🔹 Fearlessness of death → strongest predictor of suicide planning

🔹 Hopelessness → most predictive of suicide attempts

🔹 Explicit identification with death → predicted all three

2️⃣ Our study:

🧑‍⚕️ 1,412 patients admitted to the emergency department with psychiatric complaints

📊 Follow-ups at 1 & 6 months

⏩ Outcomes: Suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and attempt

⚡ Network outcome analysis to disentangle the effects of these constructs

1️⃣ Different theories of suicide emphasize distinct risk factors:

* Beck’s model → hopelessness

* Interpersonal theory → burdensomeness, lack of belonging & acquired capability for suicide

* Other theories → entrapment, defeat, and various other cognitions.

Loving the process of learning DBT in my clinical work—especially when it gives me a great excuse to try sour candy on a daily basis!

4/ This work emphasizes the need to consider social influences in the development of future theories, models, and interventions aimed at addressing problematic alcohol consumption.

3/ We found that drinking behavior was significantly influenced by individuals’ social environment, specifically the % of social ties that are abstaining or drink heavily. This influence was observed for both increases and reductions in alcohol use.

2/ Using longitudinal data from the Framingham Heart Study, we estimated panel graphical VAR models to examine temporal relations between drinking behavior, cigarette use, and individuals‘ social connections across a 10-year period.
