I encourage any white folks doing the work to unpack racism, buy a journal. Use the journal. Have a few trusted friends you can unpack with. Please! Vary voices you listen to as well. Lots of black folks, indigenous folks, other folks of the global majority are creating content to help you unpack.

We have similar discussions about when authors are purposely vague, purposely highlight different aspects of a story to achieve a larger goal, why our understanding of text changes over time, and why themes don’t always match. It’s nice to see that it applies here!

I’m so glad we are having this conversation! I do biblical criticism and we follow many of these steps. It’s really important to layer our contexts/understanding. Having a critical eye isn’t inherently criticism. For an “English teacher” she should know how this looks.

Such GREAT perspective. I lost my main source of income in May of last year. I had acquired debt to match my two salaries together (I was working 60+ hours a week plus 3 kids) I will take talking to companies about an affordable payment over destroying my mental health every day!
