I'm almost certain they didn't

Seriously? Text in an image isn't text, data-wise. Not everyone can read it. Everyone (with the right software) can read text that exists as text data. It takes a few extra seconds and it doesn't alienate a chunk of your potential audience.

As to borders.... gaaah. If we'd voted Yes in 2014 we'd almost certainly have ended up equal with rUK as states in the EU. Then Brexit (which have I mentioned Scots voted strongly against?) made a big bloody mess. But if potentially taking down 25 borders means putting one up, I'll take it.

I've also observed that most English liberals seem to support the 1st type of nationalism for autonomous regions abroad by default (Taiwan, Catalonia, Tibet) but suddenly get all Better Together when it comes to the UK.
robinjohnson.bsky.social
There's two senses of nationalism at play here: 1) "I want my somewhat-autonomous region to have full nationhood" and 2) "my nation is the best". Maybe 1 can lead to 2 but they're not the same thing, and I see far more 2-types shagging the union flag than the saltire, even up here.
robinjohnson.bsky.social
I agree with that. I've no problem calling JK Scottish if she calls herself that (which I'm not aware she's ever done, but I don't exactly hang on her every word)

If you care about inclusivity, please don't post screenshots of text in images without alt text

And please excuse me - when "Isn't that the same as Yorkshire?" comes up in this context, it's often a bit of disingenuous anti-indy whataboutism, so I bristled
robinjohnson.bsky.social
My guess is it's similar, and if a London billionaire were donating to campaigns to e.g. scrap social mobility programs in the North of England it'd be likewise bad optics

and independence looks like the best, & increasingly the only, path towards meaningful democracy.

I don't think much of that applies to Yorkshire, but if you make the case I'll listen
robinjohnson.bsky.social
But apart from "I live here", the reason I support Scottish independence is we're 90% of the way there already (our own govt with different policies on most issues, parliament with different [unarguably better] electoral system, our own laws, football teams etc etc)
robinjohnson.bsky.social
Ask them. If Yorkshire people want to go for non-isolationist independence, they have my support

It tells you *everything* you need to know about these people that they perceive machines as people and women as things.

There are hundreds of years of history of women’s scientific accomplishments not being recognised or being minimised (“not notable”). It *still* happens. Many female scientists are only acknowledged on Wikipedia thanks to the efforts of, yes, other female scientists, notably physicist Dr Jess Wade.
profannawatts.bsky.social
Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

Then became one again when it crawled out of the pit into a slightly shallower pit, I guess

In other words she's reached the level of obscene wealth where gaining or losing money numbers is entirely unrelated to anything she does
robinjohnson.bsky.social
I think she was a billionaire in dollars, then stopped being one when the pound crashed after brexit (which wouldn't have happened if it weren't for those meddling billionaires)
robinjohnson.bsky.social
If you don't wear a hat and you get hit on the head with a brick, how can you complain
robinjohnson.bsky.social
She made Robbie Coltrane put on a Cornish accent!!

My mum (an English born white Scot) calls other English people in Scotland "white settlers" and GONNAE NO DAE THAT
robinjohnson.bsky.social
Maybe she shouldn't have donated a million quid to stop us becoming an independent country, then
robinjohnson.bsky.social
I agree except for "in any way". It's still effectively an English govt/electorate that sets foreign and immigration policy for us, in rightwing ways that Scots vote strongly against *cough that sounds like 'brexit*.

I agree it's gross to call it 'colonialism' though.

Oh my god please stop associating bigotry with health

Do you want to be better than her or not

I think her ego got terminally large with fame & money as well. It was no longer a possibility that she could be wrong about something, *especially* when lots of people were telling her she was
