Hurricane Melissa teach we that when a storm move slow, the danger double. 🌪️
Check out this overview from PBC Jamaica showing some of the destruction caused across the island. 🇯🇲

During my visit to Santa Cruz on Friday, a community member explained how the area started flooding even without rainfall—possibly due to rising water from New River. By morning, water levels had risen above 3 feet in parts of the community. This is a serious concern following Hurricane Melissa
My cousin's house that was damaged in Aberdeen St Elizabeth, Jamaica by Hurricane Melissa
While driving through Montego Bay today, I noticed several people filling containers from springs, rivers and other water sources after Hurricane Melissa. 💧
I really hope the authorities have shared clear information on how to safely treat that water before use.
We rescued several Palm Swifts trapped after Hurricane Melissa. 🌪️
Here’s Iyana, a Life Sciences student, drying off some of the birds. 💚

A little beauty after the storm. 💚
Thanks to Lyndon for sharing a video of our Red-billed Streamertail—the national bird of Jamaica. 🇯🇲✨
After seeing so many videos of damage and hearing from people still trying to reach loved ones, this moment of nature brings a much-needed smile.
The Antillean Palm Swift — or “Roan Bird” as we call it in Jamaica 🕊️💚
After Hurricane Melissa, some were trapped and covered in mud. We cleaned, dried, and released them back to the wild. 🇯🇲

Just retrieved the chip from the Titley Scientific Chorus bat detector after the storm. 🦇💾
I’m excited to see which bat species were active during the weather event — every bit of data helps us understand how wildlife responds to changing conditions.
A special thanks to the person who rescued this Brown Noddy that lost its way & showed up in a garden along the coast in St. Mary on Sunday. 🐦
This seabird is usually found far out at sea or nesting on offshore cays like Morant or Pedro, so it’s not something you see on the mainland very often.
I’ve seen this video making the rounds with our endemic Jamaican boa. I’m not sure when the footage was taken, but I want to remind everyone that our Jamaican boa is not poisonous. If you ever come across one, you can gently use a stick to guide it away—there’s no need to hurt or chop up
They said it would be hard to get a job in science and even harder to fit into the academic world.
I wonder who they were talking to.

🚨 Sad news from Hellshire 🚨
This crocodile was alive on Saturday. By Wednesday, it was found dead — tail cut off, rope tied around its mouth.
A protected species, killed illegally. We must do better 🙏

For all the people that have reach out about the feature. It was about the scientific work carried out in the cave tidying bats and not the rooster doing "Science" lol. Anyway, a lot of things happen in our caves
There is always something interesting to find in the field. Look at this cricket that was turned into a Zombie by a Cordyceps fungus. Imagine a microorganism that invades your body, controls your brain, kills you and then grows out of your body. A real life body snatcher.
A special big up to Kahil and company who say an injured American Kestrel. They rescued Kessy (no comment on @Roostersworldja impressive names for birds) and brought him to Hope Zoo in the safe hands of Joey and his team. I hope the little guy can be returned to the wild.
Thanks Sharda for sharing a pic of a juvenile Northern Potoo. He believes that he is well camouflaged and invisible to everyone. So we all can leave him alone and note that there is no bird in the picture. Lol

Please continue to share your observations with @RoostersWorldja
Look you regional 👌👏🏾 in my Antigua 🇦🇬 news paper
Members of the hiking group who did the 26 km and 11 hours hike from Troy to Windsor in the Cockpit Country September 14, 2025. There were so many emotions on the hike however we completed it and we all are ok. Looking forward to the next hike. Please find time to do the things you love.
What is a hike without a little drama. However if I had a choice it should not be before the 26 km hike. The bus overshot the drop off point and we had to push the bus up the hill. Did you hear the crow or the roar of @Roostersworldja #CockpitCountry

Do you see super Paula?
A summary of the Cockpit country hike, from Troy to Windsor. We took 11 hours to complete 26 km trail. We cut through a thick sword fern, fallen trees along the trail, survive a thunderstorm and battle through the wilderness at night. What a hike. #CockpitCountry

🌿 Bursera hollickii (Burseraceae) is a dry forest tree endemic & rarest tree in Jamaica. Restricted to limestone habitats, it stabilizes soils & supports native fauna.
Listed as Critical Endangered (IUCN Red List) due to its limited range & habitat loss.

Nocturnal birds of Jamaica

As sunset approaches the Antillean Nighthawk takes flight.
Its sharp “peent” call echoes as it swoops for insects in the twilight sky.
A summer breeder in Jamaica, this nightjar is a master of camouflage by day, blending perfectly with leaf litter

I am here at the closing ceremony for the Science Explorers! Summer Workshop at the Institute of Jamaica. The kids surely had a great time and I was happy to be one of the science icons. Programs like this showcase the work of scientists in Jamaica to the kids.
