The conference aims to explore the socio-cultural interdependence of Western Art chamber music performance across all eras, examining its place in relation to performance and pedagogical settings, and evaluating the impact of chamber music performers on the communities they engage with.

Proposals are invited from postgraduate students and early-career researchers for academic papers and lecture-recitals of up to 20 minutes; each will be followed by a ten-minute Q&A session. Please note there is no piano at the venue.

The research findings were original and engaging - of particular interest is the experiential work on how the clothes worn by female lute players shaped movement and influenced performance choices.

The RMA Practice Research Prize for 2025 is awarded to Sara Salloum (University of Newcastle) for her thesis 'Female lute accomplishment and performance practices in early seventeenth-century England' (University of Durham).

Following a request from the Musici Trust, the deadline for proposals for the 2026 BFE/RMA Research Students' Conference has been extended by one week to next Thursday, 25th September.

Student Paper Prizes: RMA/Musici Trust Prize for a paper on music before 1600: Speakers will be invited to submit their papers to the RMA/Musici Trust prize for a student paper on music before 1600. The winner will receive a £300 prize, be offered mentorship, and also be invited to present their work at the RMA Annual Conference.

RMARC Student Paper Prize: Speakers will be invited to submit their papers to the Royal Musical Association Research Chronicle student-paper prize. Participation will be open to all speakers. The winner will receive a £100 book token from Cambridge University Press, as well as mentorship from the editors of RMARC to develop and expand their submission for publication in RMARC.

Submissions are welcome involving the study of any type of music, but we draw particular attention to the Musici Trust’s new prize for the best paper on music written before 1600. There's also the RMARC Student Paper Prize!
