In Old Norse mythology and Northern folklore, there are many different types of giants. Researcher Lotte Motz labored to classify them:

Jötnar, a common term used interchangeably with other names for giants.

Þursar, monstrous or hostile giants, associated with rime giants.

Mmm, I think the difference in interpretation here is that you're seeing this in the context of an ongoing mechanism, rearranging and prioritizing one's personal traits.

Whereas the younger me would wait to hit bottom, then completely upheave everything. Yes, I would not recommend that for society.

That's how I used to look at it. I would get to a critical point where I couldn't stand myself and I couldn't stand everything going on around me, and then I would have a little ego-death and start making drastic changes.

I'm not saying I found a better way. That's just what I used to do.

It looks like they do possibly share a root, originating with a stranger or outsider. The division came from how we react to that stranger. I always wondered why "hostile" sounded like "hostel."

Just listened to @norsebysw.bsky.social's examination of Gaiman's 'Norse Mythology.' Found it very gratifying to listen to his granular takedown. I was limited to my grievance against Gaiman's sugar-coating of Gerðr's attempted rape, but his analysis is more expansive. #OldNorse

I had Wunjo resting on my CPAP by my bed. One night I had to leap up and scoop the cat off the bed, as he was initiating a vomiting sequence. I didn't take my mask off and pulled the CPAP onto the floor. I've torn the bed apart and cleaned out that area, but can't find Wunjo.

I lost my joy!

When survival is at stake, ethics are a luxury. We are on a set course and we can face it with dignity or cower in fear/denial.

Without being entirely relevant, I was arguing for a Sisyphean moral resistance. You were talking about accepting the path we're on, riding toward collapse.

It sounds like you're saying that the destination (collapse of civilization by ecological forces) is already set. You asked that people be humble about their imagined courage.
