Chapter 1: The Viera Soldier

After helping Yugiri, the Warrior of Light A'rukay returns to interrogate a rather uncooperative Imperial soldier they captured, in hopes of finding his missing brother A'rhet. (1/7)

A Raen woman and a Lalafell white mage stand in the House of the Fierce, waiting for A'rukay to return. When he arrives, the Lalafell, Lolona Lona, waves to him. Lolona Lona: A'rukay, you're back! How did it fare with Yugiri? A'rukay Tia, disappointed: It could have gone better. A'rukay: Is the Imperial still here? Shion, the Raen: We are holding him, though not many want to sit and stand watch. Lolona: He's not said much, but he appears to be... carefully watching everyone, perhaps studying... Lolona spaces off, hands on her face as her eyes stare wide into the distance. Lolona: With those... deep... ruby eyes... A'rukay, snapping her out of it: Lolona. Lolona, sheepishly: Oh! Right, right... Sorry. He's right this way, A'rukay.

Bonus, from Valjan's perspective:
Ringing. As air began to fill my lungs, all I could hear was the ringing. My body ached and my heart threatened to beat out of my chest. My thoughts were clouded and I found that I struggled to remember what happened before this and why I was laying on the floor. I remembered embarking on the Ragnarok. The screens went dark, and there was that bird creature. I remember the life leaving my body and everything going dark. I tensed up at the memory and my breath quickened as my recollection returned. Breathe. Where am I? The ground was hard and cold against my back, which meant I couldn't have been lying here for long. I propped myself up onto my elbows and then to my hands, gaze sweeping around me as I took a count. Y'shtola, Estinien... No Thancred? Besides him, all were here with me, in similiar predicaments on the floor. Wait. Where's Ru? My head snapped around. Left. Right. I located him behind me, facing away and laying face first on the metal floor. He was silent, body still, and I found myself staring with bated breath, waiting for any movement or indication he was alive. With a groan, he stirred and pulled himself up to his hands and knees. I let out the breath I was holding in. With a shake of his head, he turned and met my gaze, brows arching and eyes wide in surprise. His lips parted to ask: "Were you...oggling my backside?" "Huh??" What could I say? How was I supposed to defend myself against an accusation that would have otherwise been true??

Valjan leans forward and looks at A'rukay seriously. Valjan: So, yes. I want to be with you. Valjan's eyes go wide and he cracks a nervous smile. Valjan: ...On this mission. A'rukay smiles at Valjan. A'rukay: We will be meeting at the Ragnarok in about a bell then. A'rukay starts to stand up from the bench. A'rukay: Make whatever final preparations you need, and we will see you there. Valjan, casually: Gotcha. As A'rukay walks away, Valjan slumps back against the bench.

Valjan curls his hand into a fist and stares intently forward. Valjan, thinking: [Curse this useless organ. I thought I buried these wretched feelings.] As Valjan is having an inner monologue with himself, A'rukay perks an ear and looks at him, confused. A'rukay: ... The first frame is the same scene, just from a different angle. Valjan is leaning forward with his fist clenched, and A'rukay is looking at him, confused. A'rukay gets his attention and Valjan snaps back into a relaxed pose against the bench, regaining composure. A'rukay: Valjan. Valjan, smoothly: Yeah. What's up? A'rukay: Are you alright? Valjan looks up at the sky, the sunset painting it a soft orange color. Valjan: I just thought the sun was pretty. That's all. Valjan looks down thoughtfully. A'rukay listens to him with a smile. Valjan: The point I'm trying to make is, my life has been made better with you in it. Valjan and A'rukay still sit on the bench. The dock can be seen behind them. A'rukay is listening to Valjan. with a smile. Valjan: And even if someday we go our separate ways, I will always be glad I met you.

Valjan lifts his head back up and looks over at A'rukay. A'rukay glances over with a smile. A'rukay: Yet, we can't afford to lose anyone should we wish to have the best chance of returning. We are strongest together. Valjan smiles gently, his half-lidded gaze looking forward. Valjan, softly: You've certainly made ME stronger, at the very least. A'rukay chuckles, his lips curling into a charming smile. Valjan looks at A'rukay with a smile. A'rukay: Have I? Valjan leans forward and covers the lower half of his face with his hand, hiding his flushed cheeks. Valjan: ... Valjan's ears fold down. Valjan, stammering: You've, uh... Valjan stares forward, his palm over his mouth still. Valjan, thinking: [Shit. Why am I suddenly so bad at this...]

Valjan is sitting on a bench overlooking the dock in Old Sharlayan. The sun softly sets in the sky. Valjan lifts an ear, hearing an approaching A'rukay. He smiles. Valjan: Doing the rounds? A'rukay, smiling: Just seeing how everyone is faring. A'rukay sits next to Valjan on the bench and looks over to him. A'rukay: We have quite the journey ahead of us, to a distant place from whence we may never return. A'rukay looks concerned. A'rukay: Are you sure this is what you wish? Valjan looks away and frowns. Valjan, seriously: Ru, I'm not going to back out at the last minute. I gave everyone my word. A'rukay looks down and smiles softly. A'rukay: Part of me wished you would stay behind. Valjan looks over with a risen brow. Valjan, confused: Why? A'rukay: Rhet would be devastated if something where to happen to us both. Valjan, leaning his head back: Ah.

In the short stories, I described Valjan as a baritone. He's the only character that I'm really more sure about his voice. Everyone else is sort of up in the air.

Many old friends answer the call to help get the Ragnarok up and running. Even Valjan gets visited by some familiar faces. Once he is fully recovered, Valjan returns to the group when they venture into the Aitiascope. (1/7)
Standing next to Hoary Boulder is Lolona Lona, the White Mage Scion from the beginning of the story. With a hand on her hip, she looks up with a smile. Standing next to Soroban is Shion, the Auri shinobi from the beginning of the story. She looks over her right shoulder with a smile.

After the journey into the Aitiascope, Valjan and A'rukay are standing in Old Sharlayan when Lolona runs into them. She approaches. Lolona: Well, who would have expected this? Lolona smiles. Lolona: After knowing how it began. A'rukay smiles. Valjan perks his ears forward. Valjan: Oh, you're the white mage. From Yanxia. Lolona: From Ghimlyt as well, but I am sure you don't remember, given the state you were in. Lolona pats her hand on her chest. Lolona: My name is Lolona Lona. Pleased to make your acquaintance on friendlier terms. Valjan: Pleased to make yours too. Lolona brings a fist to her chin in thought. Lolona, amused: I never did catch your name before I had to take a bit of emergency family leave, beyond "that Imperial pretty boy", that is. Valjan points a finger at his chest with a grin, equally amused. Valjan: It's just pretty boy now, but my second most popular name is Valjan. Lolona crosses her arms and grins. Lolona: You will have to tell me your stories sometime, like A'rukay does. My kids are always wanting to hear about good adventures. Valjan smiles and shrugs his shoulders. Valjan: I doubt anyone would care for my stories. Lolona: You would be surprised.

In the Aitiascope, Valjan is looking around. A'rukay steps beside him with a look of concern. Valjan has an introspective frown on his face. A'rukay: Are you well? Valjan smiles a sad little smile. Valjan: I was just hoping I'd see someone while I was in here. Valjan crosses his arms over his chest and lowers his ears. A'rukay: Who? If you do not mind my asking. Valjan: The Centurion who raised me. Valjan looks away. Valjan: I guess, in hindsight, I gave her enough trouble in life. I wouldn't want to disturb my afterlife either. Let's keep moving. When the Scions reach Hydaelyn and she praises each individual Scion, she has this to say to Valjan. Hydaelyn: Once shackled by the torments of thy past and the fear of futures yet to come, thou hast cast aside that which hath burdened thee and turned thy sights inward, to live and love in thy present.

Fiorello's head pops up from the edge of the bed. When Fiorello speaks, Valjan turns his head away with an annoyed expression. Fiorello, impishly: What a fascinating position you slumber in, with your hands so deeply tucked underneath your waistband. Valjan: Are you watching me sleep?? Fiorello preses its palm against the side of its face, for dramatic effect. Fiorello: Are you fearful that if you do not keep it within your grasp, it will detach from your body and abscond? Valjan, off-screen: What are you talking about? Fiorello moves its hand to the other side of its head. Fiorello: Your lower appendage. Valjan, exasperated: My d***??? Fiorello: Ah, you have given it a name. Valjan turns his head over to Fiorello with his brows furrowed and his teeth bared. Valjan: I'm keeping my HANDS WARM. Fiorello: Does the warm blood in your veins not sufficiently insulate you? Do you suffer from deficiency? Valjan: I'm trying to SLEEP.

Valjan looks down with a frown. Valjan: I still struggle with the thought that I betrayed her by deciding to let her go, that I lied to her when I said I would always have her back. Drusilla frowns and says softly. Drusilla: Lettin' go doesn't mean you don't love her, lad. Valjan looks up with a frown. Drusilla: And it doesn't make you a liar. Drusilla: It means you're takin' care of yourself now, and learnin' to love yourself. Valjan, thinking to himself: [...And not just fake it.] Valjan and Hermin look up at Drusilla. Drusilla: It's tellin' yourself that you deserve to be loved back. Drusilla: But you need to allow yourself to be loved first. Later on that night, When Drusilla and Hermin leave, Valjan is asleep in bed. Somewhat off-screen, he has his hands tucked into the front of his pants.

Back at the clinic, Valjan is sitting on his bed, reading a book. Aether Therapist, off-screen: Mr. Valjan, you have visitors. Valjan looks over with a risen brow. Valjan: Visitors so close to midnight? Valjan sets down his book and takes off his reading glasses with a grin. Valjan, deviously: Oh no. What could anyone want with me so late at night? When Valjan hears a familiar voice, his eyes go wide with surprise. Drusilla, off-screen: You haven't changed at all, eh? Drusilla and Hermin approach. Hermin waves with a smile. Drusilla has her arms crossed. Drusilla: Ain't surprised to see you in a medical ward. Valjan's expression softens and he smiles. Later on, they have settled down by Valjan's bed. Hermin sits on the corner of the bed while Drusilla is leaned up against a cabinet. Valjan sits on the other corner of the bed. Drusilla: It must have taken a lot to make you run back home and confront your past. I would have been hard pressed to do the same. Valjan tilts his head and grins, eyes shut. Valjan, humored: I'm still a work in progress.
