During the oral session held on June 12 at the 13th International Phycological Congress, Dr Ryuta Terada, head of the Marine Botany Lab, presented his recent research on photosynthetic studies of the cultivated red alga Pyropia yezoensis (photo), using a newly developed photon detection device.

In collaboration with the Marine Botany Lab and Kagoshima City Aquarium this week, we conducted a marine algal survey on the remote island of Okinoerabu-jima in the Ryukyu Islands. Surveys were carried out at more than ten sites along the island’s entire coastline using SCUBA and skin diving.
