New Zealand prevaricates on whether to recognise Palestine as a state, or not.
My Stuff #cartoon today #NZpol #Palestine #Gaza
Cartoon. Image shows NZ Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Gaza’s ruins, talking to a gaunt woman, huddled with her two children. He’s saying, “New Zealand is a very principled nation. We won’t be rushed”

It's a modern retelling of Māui, using rhyme (in both Reo Māori and English - which I am truly impressed by) and illustrations that feel relatable and fresh. Tipene (Ngati Kuri and Ngati Whatua) says he wanted to create a character to inspire bravery www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/loc...

Yes! I feel like he's got such an incredible ability to bring a page to life - the colours and textures specifically are so wonderful and rich! Feels like something you can just sit and soak up for a long long time

It was Bishop's FIFTH time winning book of the year. There's a nice little write up about the book awards here on the spinoff, which highlights Bishop's work: thespinoff.co.nz/books/10-08-...

It would be remiss of me to do a list of Māori comics and illustrated books (or other library items) and not mention Gavin Bishop. My problem is really which Bishop book to highlight! In the end I chose Atua: Māori Gods and Heroes: natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...

If you're not a Te Whanganui-a-Tara resident you can check out our online exhibition that some of my colleagues have put together showing some of the amazing photos and ephemera in our collection to celebrate 50 years since the 1975 hīkoi:

At the moment the Library is running a series of events form Aug-November called Mana Māori Motuhake: Māori rights and representation. There's a bunch of film screenings and some rolling exhibitions - well worth checking out:

Sorry! I've been unwell - so have some catching up to do with this list... incoming updates ahoy

It's Mahuru Māori and I thought I'd share some cool things that are at the National Library (I'll do it as a thread and add a new one every(?) day:

Te Ātea (natlib.govt.nz/records/2110...) by Katarina Mataira.

I only came across this book a few years ago, even though it was released in 1975.

I'm excited about an event that I have been helping organising - a panel discussion of Maurice Gee's contribution to children's literature. It'll be a mixture of readings and people speaking about his work

Ngā Tānga Reo Māori project has digitised, and is continuing to digitise, publications from Ngā Tānga Reo Māori: ngā kohikohinga me ōna whakamārama’ (Books in Reo Māori). You can read a bit about the project here, and how to use this resource on papers past:

Papers Past is a really helpful resource that the library offers (here's the site for it: paperspast.natlib.govt.nz) and the team have also been working really hard on a specific project to make sure that books and newspapers in te reo Māori are part of the collection, and accessible online

Today's resource isn't technically part of my portfolio area (cartoons, comics, illustrated books and children's literature) but it's a really amazing resource at the library, and so it feels appropriate to highlight on this thread...

The story is inspired by Tangaroa's own experience of kapa haka and is a beautiful celebration of gender diversity, but it's probably best to just listen to them in their own words: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq4l...

I got to see Tangaroa Paul (Ngāti Kahu, Te Aupouri, Ngāti Kuri, Ngāi Takoto, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Rēhia, Ngāpuhi and Marqueses Islands of Tāhiti) as the Same Same But Different Writers fest earlier this year, as they read Rere Atu Taku Poi! natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...
Cover of Rere Atu Taku Poi! Text on the Cover reads (top to bottom): "Rere Atu Taku Poi!
Let My Poi Fly!
Tangaroa Paul
Nā Rebecca Gibbs ngā pikitia" (final line roughly translates as 'and Rebecca Gibbs drew the illustrations').
The cover is bright with bright colours swirling in the background mimicking the movement of the poi. Two white poi with black and red string fly in the foreground, there is a figure drawn from above with long brown hair, holding one poi and reaching for another, smiling
