I never said anything about it being necessary because it changes the meaning in some instances. I think it’s necessary because without it you don’t have a pause, and I like the pause.

I’ve always written how I want my words to be read—even academic papers. That’s the whole point of writing and grammar.

I hate it when people don’t use the Oxford comma. I like the pause and, like you said, it can change the meaning.

I prefer to use grammar as I would like words to be read.

A comma invites a quick pause, a semi-colon a longer pause; an em dash a dramatic pause—and a period a full breath.

When the Oxford comma is absent no pause.

Party leadership can change anytime with an internal party vote.

Anyone can join a party and vote (you can only join one at a time).

The party’s new leader becomes PM and will serve until the next federal election or until a vote of no confidence is passed.

Our next election is in Oct.

In Canada we do not vote for our Prime Minister. Ever.

Every 4 years we vote for our local representative and the leader of the party with the most seats becomes the Prime Minister.

When Free Speech Is Weaponized: Updating Rhetoric for the Digital Age

I was recently scrolling through Facebook when I saw the comment,
“Even when we vehemently disagree with others views, I don’t think censorship is the answer. Freedom of speech is a basic tenet of a democratic society. Who gets to decide what should be censored? It’s so problematic to start cancelling people. Just look at history for examples.”
What started as a quick reply to this comment quickly evolved into a deeper reflection on the complexities of free speech in the digital age. Yes, free speech has long been heralded as a cornerstone of democratic society, essential for the flourishing of public discourse and the pursuit of truth. Rooted in the classical rhetoric of Aristotle, free speech is intended to empower individuals, foster critical debate, and uphold democratic values. However, the contemporary digital landscape has increasingly seen this ideal weaponized—used not to enlighten but to mislead, polarize, and manipulate.
This article explores how Aristotle’s classical framework of rhetoric, which once guided ethical and effective communication, must be updated to address the challenges posed by the weaponization of free speech in today’s hyper-connected world.

On Chinese maps, Taiwan is typically labeled as “Taiwan Province,” reflecting the Chinese government’s stance that Taiwan is a province of China rather than an independent entity.

Taiwanese maps and international maps generally label it simply Taiwan.
