Lunchtime listening. Music for Schools Programmes Jazz. Autumn term. Sombre scenic interludes for reflective scenarios, tower blocks and windswept underpasses, graffiti both fresh and faded.

Todmorden, home of psychfolk wyrdness, numerous avant-gardners, ufologists and ancient wisdom in the bridestones and the ice age rock formations.
In other news, Cheeky Girls are playing the Unitarian Church on Halloween.

I tried to read this article but the print faded before my eyes like a....something something....metaphor goes here...

The salt content in the supermarket long life versions is ridiculously high too. I know several ex-vegans who have seen the light and sussed the con, and the health risks.

Pauline from up my road in same caff from the Paul Graham book and Moma exhibition. "Café Waitress, John’s Café Sandy, Bedfordshire, May 1982" says the caption cos proles don't have names. Pauline the girl who lent me her tiny record player so I could play My People Were Fair as mentioned in Ad Lib.

John's caff in Sandy opposite where I used to live as a child on what was still then the Great North Rd. Photo taken yrs later obv when boarded up and petrol pumps gone. Why yes, The Last Picture Show is my favourite movie of all time as it happens.

Same mail out. "4:40pm – Look at Life: Sound of a City
1960. A look at how the Merseybeat groups revolutionised pop music in Britain and beyond." In 1960, yeah?

From this week's Talking Pics mail out. "next Sunday’s episode of At The Wheeltappers at 9.10pm is the last one (boo!) but it’s a good one! Filmed in 1977, it stars jazz and blues singer George Melly (whom we lost only this year)." Er, guys....

I know where you mean. They've tarted that whole area up haven't they? I went to the HYGIY launch at the cinema there. Haven't been to Oto since I was on a talk panel there when AVIH was published

And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me, sing to me....

evensong grantchester bells of my youth, dewy meadows and gentle descent...

Unfortunately the site "asks for consent to use your data" which I never click yes to so sadly I can't read it.

One thing I really miss about a provocative proactive counter culture is that bitd had this famousers only trend existed they would have pitched a marquee in the adjacent field or car park and filled it with rebel poets dissident authors non-comformist spirits of every persuasion.

Literary Festivals that promise a 'diverse line up' and then you look at the same old same old and think yeah, right.

What? You mean like the dungarees weren't?

As soon as I went out there to plant garlics and put the shed radio on, R3 played Ravel's Pavane. The version was a little bit 'ze fuhrer never said baby' for my liking but the gods are shining down on us autumn gardeners today.

I loved the extended re-issue cd with all the extra tracks - and they're all great too! What a purple patch that was for PT.

I enjoyed that Classic Albums doc about Sell Out. I thought that nailed it. The last of the great pop (art) Who before they become rock Who, and lost their sense of humour.
scribblerrob.bsky.social
They weren't trendy among the rockists at the time.

Thanks Ben, will read that on coffee break when I'm done planting garlics. I think it's what Ron would want.

Never knowingly miss an opportunity to replug my Ron and Russell interview from Meltdown week. Spiked by Uncut at the time for reasons best left to themselves. Why yes, skippy. That's right. It is one of the best interviews I ever did.

It also contains one of my best ever misheard lyrics. "Last night the wife said, Paul called and you're dead."

Best 5 lines in The Ballad of John & Yoko.
1. You don't take nothing with you but your soul. Think.
2. They look just like two gurus in drag
3. Eating chocolate cake in a bag
4. Christ. You know it ain't easy.
5. It's good to have the both of you back

Who would have thought that Ron Mael not only has immaculate taste but immaculate reasoning too. This is a beaut of a read from start to finish.

"The Who were charming to me when they were writing more situational songs. They didn’t necessarily concern world shattering issues, but instead really beautiful, miniature statements. [and] I love the artwork with the Heinz Baked Beans."

The Who Sell Out album cover. Pete Townshend has a giant deodorant under his arm and Roger Daltrey is sat in a tub filled with baked beans whilst holding a Heinz can. He also has baked beans on his face, clearly indicating that he has been eating them.

Huge record fare down the market. All I have left is muscle memory. Game's gone. See you next month then stall holders with the same overpriced stock.
