Emerging from the Victorian rise of the so-called "self-made" individual from existing positions of privilege (Salt was himself an Etonian), the HL sought to shift culture towards equitable "sympathy" for ALL (today, call it compassion), reflected in structural reforms.

As an early advocate for the River Wye, I find this case infuriating! Civil court is the instrument of capital & property. Central to winning/losing = capital transfer (to lawyers). Culpability = "penalty" by capital transfer between humans. NO dead or dying river species will ever be "compensated."
