Dashad: echos collaboration with CEA. Keep staff at the table. Make sure there’s potential for staff to become teachers if they want to. Work with city council on rent and program for teachers to have houses in the city.

Paying the people we have more and upscaling training for them.

Dooley: echos bargaining. Improved substitute pay so support staff not being pulled (uhhhhh) pathways to licensure for staff 👍🏼 cost of housing and living in cville is a bigger convo

Question: more turnover because of lower pay for support staff. How would you better support them?
Lisa: collective bargaining. Contract for them comes this budget cycle. Them having a seat at the table to voice their concerns.
Zy: collective bargaining is important. Upscaling…

Dooley: shout out to parent square. Cohesive and standardized communication across division. Can expand diversity of engagement options to meet families where they are. Ongoing not just one hit opportunities.

LMA - goes there a lot and it’s joyful and impactful events.

Zy: more innovative communication practices, video, multi media information. Partner with neighborhood associations and resident associations. Very active bases of community networks. (YES)

Dashad: starts with board being in the community 👍🏼 facing hard questions face to face.

Lisa: hired a 2nd family engagement team member. We can always do better. Events, shows up. Push out into community and knock on doors and talk. Reach out to people with translators.

Question: how to expand community engagement
sgillikin.bsky.social
Zy: transportation can present a challenge for some. Accountability is important. How are we prioritizing education in our community? Black achievement not being prioritized for generations being passed down. Communication can be improved, community partners too.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Lisa: transportation isn’t the issue for most. People doing calls and visits. No one is on the waitlist for buses. Dig deeper than just reasons in CCS. Fear for some families.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Dashad: went wrong on giving city transportation. City doing their best to hire bus drivers. “No one wants to work” 🤔
Need to work with families.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Dooley: attendance is an issue. Steep drop off after Covid. Hired an attendance social worker going to community to families to address root causes. Attendance plans (these do nothing fyi) and working on the positive. Transportation- is sufficient.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Question: what is happening with absenteeism? Is transportation adequate?
sgillikin.bsky.social
Lisa: focus is on early learning. 90% of brain development is in 0-5 years old. Our community needs to increase investment in early learning. Prek center, other centers, pushing for communication with non profits supporting families.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Dashad: guidance counselor looked liked me and was always “on me”, invest in early childhood, hold parents and students accountable doing homework. (There is no hw until 7th8th grade…)
sgillikin.bsky.social
Dooley: tier 1 instruction is rigorous and robust and all kids are present. PLCs include specific questions on black achievement
sgillikin.bsky.social
Questions from the crowd:
Black children test scores in 40-50%… what will change?
Zy: invest in more teachers who look like those students. 👏🏼 hiring AND retention. Invest in the entire family. Invest in literacy- bedrock of educational experiences.

The first and second contacts and SROs as last resort.

Dashad has entered the chat 30 minutes late. Says he would’ve voted yes if there was data to support it. Wants strong safe guards so they don’t impede student rights. Wants students and teachers feel supported. Only priority of CPD should be no violence in schools. Says SEL staff and CSAs should be

Mentions Relationship building… ew.

We did expand mental health positions but there’s behavior behind their capacity. Says SROs fill the gaps.
sgillikin.bsky.social
Dooley: voted yes. Sees CPD in buildings a lot. Over 400 911 calls each year, 200 are calls for service. Over 100 threat assessments each year. Wants us to have robust MOU with CPD, training and evaluation and program, accountability.

Vote in March was rushed and whole board wasn’t there.
