Hey @gavinnewsom.bsky.social, I’m sure you didn’t mean to design your mail-in ballot envelopes this way. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with making it easy to tell how someone voted on Prop 50 before it’s opened? Totally innocent design choice, right?

That sounds nice on paper, but there’s one problem, almost all billionaire wealth is tied up in unrealized gains. That means it’s not cash; it’s the paper value of assets like stock or company shares that haven’t been sold. You can’t tax something that hasn’t been realized.

Sadly however most of ‘the middle’ only sees the Democrats shutting down the government, and acting like a petulant child, which is why I stand by my comment that this strategy is not going to bode well for the Democrats.

That’s a foolish claim. Passing the bill in the Senate required 60 votes, not a simple majority. This shutdown falls squarely on Democrats, who decided throwing a fit was more important than keeping the government running.
