It’s been exactly 3 months since I left my last job. I haven’t regretted leaving for a moment, and am working hard to start something of my own. Check out www.supertalentcreative.com.

But having watched this fun ad for Norwegian bank DNB, I wish I’d made more of an exit.

This ad from the Canadian province of Ontario uses a 1987 address by Ronald Reagan to send an anti-tariff message to US audiences.

The effect has been immediate - Trump angrily declared yesterday that “ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED."

Elbows up!

Did you know that in the UK there are 8m people in severe debt (29m in the US)?
It’s why I love this 2003 ad for LendingTree, a US online lending marketplace. It’s a satirical look at lifestyle inflation and credit card debt, targeting people in denial about their finances.

In 1930, a German margarine company ran a marketing campaign offering buyers a series of collectable cards that predicted future technology. The cards depicted crazy predictions of life in the year 2000 - things like wireless personal communication and video calls.

Agency Ally & Gargano created the legendary "Absolutely, Positively Overnight" campaign in 1978, highlighting the speed and reliability of FedEx’s service. Possibly my favourite is this "Hello Federal" ad, emphasizing the simplicity of the service.

When agencies brag about achieving 100k+ views with an ad, remember...

Most popular show on UK TV right now is Strictly Come Dancing = c.5m viewers

1966 World Cup Final (most-watched TV show in the UK ever) = 32m viewers

Pingfong’s Kids Baby Shark Dance = 16b (yes, billion) views

Enjoy this 3-minute 2017 Thai ad for Verena Sure, a dietary supplement that helps weight control by ‘blocking fat’.
‘Capture’ is a ridiculous, fabulous piece of comedic storytelling, as an overly officious highway cop deems a couple of motorists too oily and fatty to continue.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Dove’s ‘Campaign for Real Beauty’. Case in point: this 2007 Canadian ad, titled ‘Onslaught’, brilliantly captures the relentless pressure that girls and women face throughout their lives. Inspired soundtrack is La Breeze by Manchester band Simian.

On this day in 1066, the Battle of Hastings was fought, at which King Harold of England was defeated by William ‘the Conqueror’.
In 1966, to mark the 900th anniversary of the battle, Guinness released a famous poster with the slogan: "Battle of Hastings 1066, Bottle of Guinness 1966."

Today would have been Margaret Thatcher’s 100th birthday.
Often called the "Iron Lady", she served as British Prime Minister from 1979 to 90, implementing highly polarising policies.
Which is why this 2013 ad to promote a Guardian feature on the Thatcher era was genius.

Here’s a fun ad for Canon Pixma printers. Created by Grey New York in 2015, the “Never again” campaign dramatised the importance of printing, reminding us that an all-digital ‘paperless world’ can have disastrous consequences.

Happy Friday!

Can an ad make you cry? You'd better believe it! This 2013 ad, titled ‘Giving’, is for Thai telecom company TrueMove H. But it doesn’t talk about call plans or network coverage. In fact, it doesn’t talk about the product at all. Created by Ogilvy Bangkok.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.
In 2012, Grey NY made this ad for Canon USA featuring overzealous photographers going to extreme lengths to take pictures using their Canon EOS Rebel T4i cameras. The soundtrack was sung by Rachel Fannan of the band Only You and one-time drummer for the Russian group Pussy Riot.

‘Brian Cox Goes to College’ was the 2024 launch ad for Uber One for Students, which offers free food one day a week. The idea’s simple - the offer’s so good that everybody wants to be a student, even a 78-year-old actor.

RIP Dame Patricia Routledge has passed away. Best known for her comedy role as Hyacinth Bucket (“the Bucket woman”) in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, Routledge appeared in several ad campaigns over the years, including the RAC, British Gas, and this ad for TV Licensing in 1995.

A slightly bizarre British public information film from 1974, titled ‘The Fatal Floor’. Created by the Central Office of Information, it warns about the threat posed by combining a rug and a freshly polished floor. “Polish a floor, put a rug on it, you might as well set a man trap.”
