$: be a tourist where you live. Go to a museum or arboretum. Get lunch at a local restaurant. Check gift shops for locally-made holiday inspiration. (Of if you're close to a target city, take a road trip and post pictures!)

time: if you (or your partner) are worried about protest safety Oct18th, start small. Find a corner or overpass event today and drive past, honking encouragingly. If it looks fine, park and walk by to get a feel for it. Stop for fifteen minutes, or say hello and make new friends.

prep: Use a passcode, not facial or thumprint recognition on your phone. More security tips: https ://simpleresistance .us/phone-security/

$: support local, minority owned businesses

time: memorize one emergency number. Choose someone NOT likely to be in lockup with you. ;-)

prep: build an analog copy of all your contacts. More details: simpleresistance.us/analog-addre...

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: support local, minority owned businesses. They are under attack. Black Blossom Bakery is (hopefully temporarily) offline, due to severe doxing from the right after refusing to make a Charlie Kirk cake. Support businesses where you are, so they can survive events like this.

time: memorize the phone number of one person you could call in a crisis who is not likely to be with you during the crisis.

preparation: build an analog copy of your contacts. Record anyone you might want to reach if none of your devices had power. Include people in other places that you think would show up if you were in town and your car broke down. Use a paper address book and store it with emergency papers, or create a document and print copies for each car.

$: buy "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook" by Mark Bray.

time: learn to use Signal: ssd.eff.org/module/how-t...

prep: create a costume for your next protest. Bring some spectacle and fun to the day! Include a mask if you don't want your face in pictures.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: buy "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook" by Mark Bray. His family is fleeing death threats after being targeted by Turning Point USA. If a dense history book isn't your jam, consider donating a copy to your local counter-culture coffee shop. Just leave it on a table with with a note: "free copy, please return when finished."

time: learn to use Signal, for safer coordination and messaging. https: //ssd.eff. org/module/how-to-use-signal

prep: do you enjoy costumes at protests? Why not join them! It's October -- there's no better time to put together spectacle, and you have a little over a week until the big Oct 18th protests.

$: distribute toiletry packs to unhoused people.

time: shift your entertainment budget to better companies: Amazon -> Bookshop .org, Sinclair -> PBS

prep: invite 2-5 people with similar values to plan a simple action: a protest, calling Senators, writing postcards

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: put together toiletry kits for unhoused people. If your dentist gives away those little bags of goodies, that's a good start. Add a power bar, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, pads, and $5 if you can afford it. Keep them in the car to hand out.

time: shift your entertainment budget to better companies: Amazon -> Bookshop .org, Sinclair station -> PBS etc.

prep: Identify a group of 3-6 people who have similar resistance values. Plan an action together. Pick something simple: a protest, calling Senators, writing postcards. You're laying foundations.

#DoOneThing: find your folks

$: Take a class. Build resilience or meet people over shared interests. Tuition supports locals

time: organize a politically inspired group : book club, museum outing, postcards

prep: reach out, make amends, tell someone how you feel...take a social risk

#threethings
#DoOneThing : find your folks

$: Sign up for a class. Build resilience (cooking, sewing) or meet people over shared interests (art, sports.) This is a great way to build community, and tuition usually supports local people.

time: organize a politically inspired group event. Book club, museum outing, postcard writing, protest carpool.

prep: reach out to someone you're overdue to touch in with. Make amends over something that feels impossible. Tell someone how much they mean to you. Take a social risk.

#DoOneThing

$: find and support a local news source

time: share three humorous or inspiring resistance stories. Verify them first (local news, multiple different reports)

prep: document visual resistance: graffiti, costumes, etc. Post it with a few words about context.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing : control the message

$: identify a local news organization with good content for your area. Subscribe or donate to them.

time: look for three humorous or inspiring stories about resistance today. Verify them (look for local news) and then share them. There is a widespread idea that Americans aren't doing anything, but in fact we're everywhere, every day, creatively resisting. It's up to us to get the word out.

prep: take pictures of interesting resistance graffiti or protests (avoid/cover faces unless you ask.) Flood social media with them, or use them to illustrate your thoughts.

#DoOneThing

$: buy lunch for a friend who is demographically (age, race, class, etc.) different from you.

time: zoom in/out: read news that is very local, or international

prep: join this ACLU protest rights/safety/de-escalation training: act.aclu.org/a/no-kings-k...

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing : today we take stock.

$: buy lunch for a friend who is demographically (age, race, class, etc.) different from you. Ask them how they're doing, and really listen to what they say.

time: Zoom in/Zoom out on the news. Pick a story you've seen on social media and read two news articles that are either extremely local, or international.

prep: the ACLU is hosting a safety, de-escalation and rights training for protesters on Monday October 6th. This is useful whether or not big protests like Oct18 are your jam. https://act.aclu.org/a/no-kings-kyr-eng1

preparation: if you're all-in on Halloween, go political! simpleresistance.us/hellmouth/

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: buy a bubble-gun, cowbell or costume to liven up your next street-corner protest. Spectacle draws attention and encourages participants.

time: Get involved in postcard or letter-writing campaigns. Details: https://simpleresistance.us/postcard-protest/

preparation: if you're all-in on Halloween, plan a political theme this year. If your area is hard-red, how about an absurd caricature of the President, played perfectly straight?

#DoOneThing

$: regift Starbucks cards to unhoused people for free wifi, charging and bathrooms

time: learn how to use gift links wherever you subscribe

prep: curate your news feeds for calm, reliable voices

#ThreeThings

For more options, visit simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: regift starbucks cards: the $6 latte you don't really want could be wifi, charging and bathroom access for an unhoused person. If you get a lot of cards, gift in bulk to a shelter.

time: Many subscriptions come with gift links. Terms vary — you might get a set number per month, or per subscription. Research the terms for any newsgroups you subscribe to, then use your gift links to share stories you think are important.

prep: Staying informed but calm takes work. Curate news feeds regularly. Keep the reliable, steady voices. Remove things that rely on inflaming adrenaline emotions (fear, urgency, extremism.)

#DoOneThing

$: donate to NPR

time: learn about The Committee for the First Amendment: www.committeeforthefirstamendment.com

prep: prepare a quick "elevator pitch" that lays out why the GOP owns this government shutdown

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: today is the first day public media is without public funding. We fix that by funding it directly: donate to NPR

time: The Committee for the First Amendment was a McCarthy era resistance group out of Hollywood. They used their skills to speak up for the constitution. Jane Fonda's father was a founder, and she has launched the group. Read up on this piece of history, and if you're employed in entertainment, consider signing on: committeeforthefirstamendment. com

prep: the government is closed. Trump told Politico that Democrats can "go F* themselves" and threatened "irreversible" harm if he didn't get exactly what he wanted. This is a tantrum by a man losing control. Prepare a quick "elevator pitch" to use whenever someone blames this on Democrats, or "both sides" it. The self-proclaimed King of negotiation, profanely refused to negotiate.

#DoOneThing

$: join Costco — start a tiny co-op or gift extra units to a food bank

time: build relationships in your neighborhood. Start as simple as a friendly wave and build up now

prep: economic hardship seems likely. Review your family finances with an eye towards sustainability

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: Costco is "one of the good ones." Consider forming a tiny co-op to split up bales of TP and 3-packs of ketchup, or donate surplus to food banks.

time: Create relationships in your neighborhood. Do it formally through a neighborhood project, or take the next step with someone. Wave, borrow a cup of sugar and take back cookies, or invite them to dinner. Start slow and build.

prep: Prices are rising and economic indicators aren't good. Sit down with your family budget and give some thought to resilience. This may last a while, so look for sustainable adjustments.

#ThreeThings
simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: support artists directly

time: sign up for Oct 18th No Kings protests

prep: get a few great resistance reads for the stormy winter months. Consider forming a study group...

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: creatives rely on uncertain funding, patching together a living from arts grants, cultural moments, patronage, sales and side gigs. Pick an artist, writer, comedian, or musician whose work keeps you going. Check their social media and web site for how they monetize, and support them directly.

time: October 18th is the next big No Kings protest. It'll be the last before winter weather makes large events impossible in many areas. Make this a massive turnout -- we want it to be AT LEAST as big as the lovely balmy June 14th date was. Bigger would send a hell of a message. Sign up for an event in your area, or plan one. Even the smallest events help (make sure you report numbers afterwards.)

prep: winter weather brings cozy weather for tea and reading. Order a couple of history or how-to books that will fuel your resistance, and make time to read them. (buy from powells .com or support small bookstores through bookshop .org)

#ThreeThings
simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: look for home-cooks making commercial meals to heat. Replace fast food with local businesses.

time: Search #Warravagedportland and boost the signal. Ridicule works.

prep: Get certified copies of your birth certificate, all marriage/divorce/name change docs.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: in many areas you can get prepared meals to heat at home, made locally with good ingredients. Some are stand-alone businesses, others are part of a network. If you get take-out or convenience food regularly, look into this alternative in your area.

time: ridicule is a great way to deflate fascists in general, and Trump in particular. Search #Warravagedportland and boost the signal on satire.

prep: Get a certified copy of your birth certificate and any documents to prove you're the person with that name. (Name changes, ALL marriage and divorce certificates, etc.) Women are already experiencing issues getting updated ID, and voter registration rules may change suddenly. Be prepared.

#ThreeThings
simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: buy holiday gifts (honey, jam) from local farms

time: use window paint to decorate your car. If that feels unsafe, use sidewalk chalk at night.

prep: rebuild relationships with military friends and family, or educate yourself about military culture. (See image/alt.)

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: support a local farm: buy fall produce, go apple-picking or stop off for local honey or pickles to gift this holiday season.

time: get some window paints and decorate your car with patriotic anti-Trump messages. If this doesn't feel safe where you are, get chalk and leave sidewalk messages under dark of night.

prep: Part of the reason the 3.5% rule works is that people military or police are more likely to refuse orders to fire on civilians if they feel empathy for people in the crowd. Military defection is almost always fatal to regimes. If you have friends or family in service, reinforce those relationships. Start with an email or postcard if you're estranged, or take a veteran friend to lunch and *ask* if they're willing to put in the labor of talking about military culture. (A specific current topic might help get the conversation started, and remember to LISTEN.) Cultural sensitivity is always the first step in alliance.

#DoOneThing

$: splurge on a convenience that will free up time or energy for resistance work. e.g. Call your Senator while the new rice cooker cooks

time: Go to a Sinclair or Nexstar protest

prep: Take care of government business before a possible shutdown at the end of the month.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: splurge on a convenience that will free up time or energy for resistance work. If you always burn the rice, get a rice cooker and call your Senator every time you use it. (Messages count!)

time: Go to a Sinclair or Nexstar protest this weekend. These are easy protests if you're just getting started. It's okay if you don't have a sign. Go, and thank the organizers if you get the chance.

prep: A government shutdown seems likely. Take care of any business that involves government offices before the end of the month.

#ThreeThings
simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: use cash for tips and small purchases

time: call your Senator: "I blame the GOP for the looming shutdown. Tell the 'great negotiator' to negotiate!"

prep: learn to make one bean-based meal your family likes. Then learn to start with dried beans for serious savings.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: use cash for tips and small purchases

time: call your Senator and tell them "I blame the GOP for the shutdown. The 'great negotiator' is afraid to negotiate!"

prep: food costs will keep going up. Learn to make at least one bean-based meal your family likes. If you already do, up the ante: start with dried beans for serious savings.

#DoOneThing

$: make annual donations into recurring donations

time: list your media sources and find out who owns them. Swap in better options where applicable.

prep: skip insulting trade-in value on working phones. Connect them to a pre-paid plan for safer border crossings.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing don't give up now! edition

$: Do you donate to NPR or PBS during fund drives? Replace that with a recurring donation — it makes budgeting steadier.

time: write down every radio, TV and cable source you get news or programming from. Look up who owns each of them and consider alternatives that diversify the voices reaching you.

prep: If you're replacing a functional phone, skip the insulting trade-in value and save the old one for travel. Connect to a pre-paid plan for border-crossing with clean electronics you don't mind losing.

#ThreeThings
simpleresistance.us
#DoOneThing

$: if your church isn't fighting, redirect donations to someone who is. Tell them.

time: contact Sinclair advertisers and ask them to drop ad buys.

prep: put important resistance dates on your calendar, like any priority. Oct 18th for protest. Nov. 4th to vote.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: Tithe for change: if your religious home isn't fighting fascism redirect one month of contributions to someone who is. Tell them why.

time: Sinclair isn't just capitulating, it's eager for more. Identify local Sinclair-owned stations. Be polite when you call — staff may be on your side — to tell them you'll be asking local advertisers to stop ad buys. More tips in comments.

prep: fall gets busy with school, holidays and shorter days. Schedule some of the big dates now, to avoid conflicts: October 18th to protest. Nov. 4th to vote. Get in the habit of putting important resistance dates on the calendar, like any other priority.

#ThreeThings

#DoOneThing

$: join PBS passport and feel good about entertainment

time: Collage and charcuterie: express yourself artistically and build community

prep: add cultural calendars to your digital planner. Not all important dates are Christian. Support minority cultures.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing

$: Join your local PBS station. For $7/mo you get fresh streaming content you can feel good about. (There's also a free app, but pay if you can.) https ://www.pbs. org/pbs-app/

time: Host Collage and Charcuterie: everyone brings something for the charcuterie table/drinks. You supply old magazines, scissors, glue sticks, markers, etc. Have fun and forge community while you express yourself. (h/t Beth)

prep: Add cultural calendars to your digital planner. Send or post greetings, and check before scheduling meetings to help minorities feel included. This item brought to you by Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and launch of "our family cannot attend that back-to-school event" season.

#DoOneThing boycott edition

$: boycott Disney. It's working: www.thegodpodcast.com/p/bless-the-...

time: if tracking boycotts is overwhelming, try procotting: shastaw.substack.com/p/spend-wisely

prep: begin thinking about how to align the holiday season with your values, now.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing boycott edition

$: boycotts work when they are laser-focused and widespread. There are a dozen companies involved in Kimmel's firing, but cancelling Disney+ (or vacation plans) is the visible pressure point. There is real momentum and that matters. https://www.thegodpodcast.com/p/bless-the-disney-superfans-who-are

time: economic pressure is important, but who can keep up with today's villain? Instead, identify a few good places and shop there first. Buy what they don't have anywhere that isn't the target of a specific, current boycott. https://shastaw.substack.com/p/spend-wisely

prep: Holiday season is coming. Whether you're a Halloween baby or a Christmas angel, start conversations with friends and family about how to align the holidays with your values.

#DoOneThing find your lane

$: buy lunch for someone who seems to have it all figured out. Get some tips, or learn you aren't alone. Or both!

time: meet neighbors in the real world today: protest, museum, or library event

prep: Find out what kind of activist you are: bit.ly/42HSCPV

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing find your lane edition
$: when you feel lost, buy lunch for someone who seems together. You'll either find out they feel overwhelmed too, or you'll get some useful ideas. (Maybe both.)
time: if you haven't found community yet, go somewhere today. Go to a protest and talk with people. Go to a museum and talk to the docent. Go to the library and ask the librarian about upcoming events.
prep: if you aren't sure what kind of activism you want to engage in, an abortion-rights group created a useful worksheet. Invite friends over or work through it alone. http://bit. ly/42HSCPV

prep: make a list of things you're putting off.

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing
$: energy credits are expiring soon. Could you make your home more efficient while they exist? (Link in comments.)
time: Identify one local station owned by Sinclair or Nexstar. Send it a physical letter, or call. Demand they denounce Kimmel's cancellation on-air. Call local businesses you frequent and ask them not to advertise there. (Seattle: KOMO news.)
prep: make a list of resilience tasks you're putting off: passport renewal, vaccinations, emergency preparedness. Today you just make the list.

$: donate to PBS or other independent media

time: call Congress about budget negotiations or the FCC

prep: if you work in academics or other targeted fields, make a conscious choice how to use social media: double down, or shift resistance to private venues

#ThreeThings
#DoOneThing
$: donate to PBS or other independent media
time: call Congress. You don't need a sophisticated script—pick something you care about and rant away. Budget negotiations or the FCC are good topics, if you need ideas. (Check 5calls, too.)
prep: if you work in academics or other targeted fields, make a social media plan. Will you defiantly fly your flag? Or will you bifurcate, creating a public persona and a private one? Examine your values and choose consciously. If caution rules the day, plan for other areas to shift your resistance energy to.
