Star Wars 1977 has a stilted kind of style, both technical and acting-wise, that you see a lot in b-movies. I'm not quite sure how to describe it but I've called it "b-movie acting". Not necessarily bad, but not good by the standards of mainstream intelligensia.

(Tho I like Lucas much more as an artist than Spielberg.)

I consider Star Wars to be a kind of auteur-driven project (Spielberg and Lucas both, in general), which I think is why copies failed so miserably.

I do kind of admire that any studio would look at two films in a series bombing and still saying "this is what we should put our money into, this is going to be a franchise no matter what the audience wants".
