In Great Britain, there are about 1.7 billion passenger rail journeys each year without serious incident (about 150 million a month). It's worth keeping perspective as news media discuss banning knives on trains or installing scanners at stations.

Interestingly, this Labour government has put a couple of highly-qualified non-politicians in charge of major govt departments (Lord Timson as Prisons Minister and Lord Hermer as Attorney General). Bet Farage isn't thinking abut people like them....

It does tend to be more normal in Hollywood for actors to be quite liberal - to be a good actor you have to be able to be open to all experience. Not true of everyone by any means (and of course you have the nutjob Scientologists mucking up everything), but still more likely.

People who vote or stand for Reform almost all think that running councils is easy and that it will only take a bit of common sense to identify waste and make savings. They were always going to run into problems. because they have no respect for anyone in the public sector.

Next time someone tells you that train drivers "just push buttons" show them this from the BBC

The driver "managed to contact the control
centre at Network Rail and get the train
diverted onto the slow line", Calder says.

"That was absolutely crucial because this
train was scheduled to be travelling through
Huntingdon station on the tracks with no
platform at 125mph."

"It didn't stop in the middle of nowhere,
which would have been very difficult."

Calder thinks this was handled in the "safest
possible way" thanks to the "incredible
professionalism from the driver and the
police". Train drivers are trained on how to
take appropriate action, he adds,
