I read the entirety of "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask" when I was about 11 (and which is INCREDIBLY homophobic and is probably the number 1 thing that kept me from clueing in for several years). Its descriptions of homosexuality were so bleak that I was like

Happy coming out day! I didn’t so much come out as I did clue in.

May 29, 1985, I woke up and literally said “duh”. I was 18, and it would have happened sooner if I had had the vocabulary for it/if there had been positive media representation.
