Ironic Hyundai evangelist, lover of books, laugher at life. I follow the Portland Timbers and #MLS, generally, just not in long form. #rctid Pretty excited for the end of 2025, honestly. Not our best year, globally.

Some notes from the day and some notes from Lucky Loser, the Trump expose based on his tax returns that I just finished today.

Recommended only for gluttons, will confirm and exceed your worst expectations! (1/2)

Metaphor? Symptom? Prediction? Who can say? Trump demolished the East Wing of the White House to make way for a big shitty ballroom he’ll be...

My sisters and I examined a pile of clothing that looked like something you’d see on a reality TV show to select what looked like the most useful items.

The task had something to do with finding someone, a major theme for my subconscious lately.

Good morning. #Musicsky

Trump's habit of taking on more projects/debt than he can handle is a major theme of the book. Everything he ever got over the line happened because someone else either pushed or pulled him through it.

Does he have enough support now to sustain his "authoritarian attempt" or will he fuck it up? 2/2

5) He Died, So That Future Vice Presidents May Thrive

When Harrison died, no one was *really* sure whether a vice president served until a successor was elected/appointed, or whether he (one day, she) just assumed the presidency for the rest of the term. (7/7)

4) That Speech? It Was Edited for Length

At the expense of ignoring bigger things (e.g., he dissed Simon Bolivar!), Harrison asked Daniel (fucking) Webster to edit his speech. It still clocked in at over 2 hours and 8,445 words.

Here’s the Bolivar thing. (6/7)

3) Macho Dipshit

Harrison famously gave a *crazy* long speech on the damp, frigid day of his inauguration without a hat and coat and that was one of many stupid things he did to prove he wasn’t too old.

It’s possible his schedule did the rest. (5/7)

2) Won America’s First Meme War

That elitist git Martin Van Buren tried to tar Harrison "as a provincial, out-of-touch old man who would rather 'sit in his log cabin drinking hard cider.'”

Harrison flipped it by embrace both populist tropes in his campaign. (4/7)

1) A “War Hero”

If anyone deserves credit for stealing Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and parts of Michigan, it’s Harrison. Between treaties written with a slippery pen and warring, he claimed those states for white settlement – and built his political career on it. (3/7)

Though almost certainly most famous for “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too” for dying *very* early in his term, Harrison had a massive impact on settling the then-West and America’s role as a beacon of democracy…but he was also - get this - an early, eager proponent of a professional civil service. (2/7)
Did William Henry Harrison’s 3 months on the job warrant a thread of their own?

Even some historians skip him in their rankings, but America’s 9th president’s pre-presidential life touches on a lot of themes of his times – and some from ours.

Digging in… (1/7)

Anyone else softly sing “Unchained Melody” as they go to the bathroom lately?
This is far from a crazy response. Both of these teams could do with a little (or more) freshening up.
In the event any questions remain about the popular energy driving the MAGA movement and where and how the mass movement side is being organized…
Chip Roy: "The truth is the marxist, radicals, and Islamists the Democratic Party promoted this weekend, they cannot handle the truth. The truth is that there is a king and that king is Jesus. And the president has been willing to say it, & Charlie Kirk was willing to say it & he got killed for it."
I have to think neither Portland nor #RSL will go far in the 2025 #MLS playoffs, so…yeah, drink it all in on Wednesday, because that could very well be the winner’s last happy feeling of 2025.

Good morning. #Musicsky #rctid

Protests, organizing, paranoia and it comes with a movie review to boot. Notes on a weekend.

Also, Good Fortune will make you feel better, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll like it.

5) Canadian Crises
Before 54’ 40” or Fight, MVB had to soothe relations with Canadians due to the Patriot War (Canadian rebels operating out of upstate Vermont) and the Aroostook War (basically, a logging dispute in upper Maine). Sometimes talking is good! (7/7)

4) When He *Really* Betrayed It
In the same way progressives freak out 21-cenutry centrists, abolitionists panicked MVB like nothing else. He pushed his government to argue against free-ish slaves in the famous Amistad case. Lost that one to John Quincy Adams… (6/7)

3) How He Betrayed It
MVB preferred talking over fighting, often to a fault. His opposition to slavery grew to the end, but his love for party and the Union tied him to the accommodationists in his party, e.g., Polk, Buchanan, and finally Stephen Douglas over Lincoln. Norms must hold, etc. (5/7)
2) His Best Side
A protégé/ally of Jackson, MVB ran for president 3 times, first in 1836, again in 1844, then as the candidate for the anti-slavery Free Soil Party in 1848. His opposition to slavery was his best enduring trait. Refused to annex Texas over it. (4/7)

1) Election 1836 Was Wacky
While he didn't quite *need* it, MVB eked his win in 1836 when the then-opposition party, the Whigs (kinda, sorta former Federalists), ran 3 separate candidates. They hoped to push the count to the House. Didn’t work. (3/7)

At just 5’ 6”, “Little Van” was the only U.S. president for whom English was a 2nd language (Dutch was 1st); Van Buren ran a state-wide political machine called the Albany Regency, which cooperated with Tammany Hall to run New York. Wait, there’s more! (2/7)

I have neither forgotten nor given up: it’s Martin Van Buren (“MVB”)…afternoon!

America’s 8th president was a Democrat in a way 21st-century Americans would recognize: strenuously committed to keeping the peace. Possibly too smart for his own good/politics. (1/7)

Unctuousness in human form.
The only reason to have this smirking weasel on the Sunday shows is to cut his mic and yell at him until he stops smirking.
Mike Johnson: "We congratulate them on an apparently violent-free speech exercise ... but if President Trump was a king, the government would be open right now ... by the way, the Mall was open because President Trump hasn't closed it."
