Which is particularly odd, given they know there is huge demand for toys and costumes, and yet they don't think kids, who famously love playing together, might want to play together with those toys and costumes.

I thing the key thing is it is done very well.
Plus multiple strong female characters really helped, so girls can role play it with their friends. (Which, as someone pointed out, disney hit on with Frozen but don't seem to have even realised it)

I'm very glad my kids are finally overdone on it. It was a very, very long summer of them trying to watch/ listen to it nonstop.

The long drives to and from holidays just crawled past while they demand the 8th repeat of 'This is what it sounds like' in a row.

She does identify there is a problem, which is good.
I’m not sure I can agree with her solution of “how about we solve it for the richest families so they can buy their children an advantage” rather than “how can we make the system better for everyone”
