the US has a hereditary nobility of heirs and now great great grandchildren to fortunes made a century before they were born who’ve never had to work. Without a National Trust the mansions were demolished or donated (unusable), and the privilege signifiers are rarer and unknown to the public mostly.

I’d add a qualification that for an architect or engineer it’s almost certain they had something to do with the civilian war effort unless there were extenuating circumstances like George Nakashima who was in an internment camp for a couple years.

The weird thing is in the 80s and 90s when the Wehrmacht myths were way more prevalent this stuff didn’t seem as popular? It only came around when people demonstrably should know better?
