DOSBox and ScummVM don't make you suffer. Suffering should be for the people who choose to. Not everything has to be a challenge, especially not when it comes to emulation.

And those are indeed fun excursions if you're into that sort of thing, but it is also a HUGE barrier for people who just want to play the games.

Yup, I've had that happen. I tried starting a new game by myself so I could gather some shit and get us started for future play, and I ended up in the fucking desert.

The first time my son and I tried Survival on Peaceful, we spawned in a swamp. That was horrible as well.

I've never liked survival games but playing Minecraft with my son is an absolute blast. We work so well together. He's the brains of the operation and I'm the hunter/gatherer. He knows all the recipes and I'm the one who goes out and gathers resources.

We got super lucky and spawned on a mountain next to a forest, so we are swimming in resources. Tons of wildlife and wood in the forest, and the mountain is full of coal and iron. We played for a couple of hours and we're already decked out in iron armor from head to toe.

Yesterday was a big milestone for me and my son. We played our first *real* Minecraft game.

Previously, we've fucked around in Creative mode and dipped out toes into Survival mode on Peaceful difficulty. But yesterday, we played Survival mode on Easy and suddenly it was a whole new ball game!
