A little thread: Science is defiantly anti-fascist because it pursues truth, is necessarily collaborative, and relies on open communication. And because its falsifiability is incompatible with the cultism, faith-based belief systems, disinformation, and propaganda of Christian nationalism.

PS I took that photo myself on the very day—August 30, 2019—the Eisenhower era coal plant, Milliken Station, burned its last traincar full of coal.

80% of residents surveyed are opposed to the data center plan.

It’s gonna be a fight.

Contact Sustainable FingerLakes if you want to help.

So, for all those who love the Finger Lakes: a b*tcoin miner plans to turn the old retired coal plant on Cayuga Lake (just north of Ithaca) into a hyperscale data center.

A bunch of us worked for years to shut down that coal plant—and won in 2019.

Reminder: Of the 8 million kids who live in orphanages, 80% ARE NOT ORPHANS. “Orphanages are a lucrative business in developing countries. This has led to the trafficking of children to fill them.”

Living in an orphanage also quadruples your risk of sexual violence.

Also and of course:

“Many of the children at Sovann Komar had biological families, some of whom came to see them at the center. They missed their kids, but they knew the orphanage could give them a good education.”

🥚 Wealthy US heiress opens an orphanage in Cambodia.

Uncovered years later: rape, abuse, self-injury, fraud.

“Foster parents struggled to connect with their foster children, who felt they were treated differently from biological kids.”

Zero adoptees are surprised. 1/2

Planet-heating methane is escaping from cracks in the Antarctic seabed as the region warms, with new seeps being discovered at an "astonishing rate," scientists have found, raising fears that future global warming predictions may have been underestimated.

TY @clancyny.bsky.social for bringing this story to my attention.

Dr. Friederike Otto deserves our support against bad-faith actors—and better headlines. 4/4

This isn’t RFK Jr. “linking” Tylenol to autism. Attribution science isn’t even correlative. It uses counterfactual analysis to compare two versions of the world: one with heat-trapping emissions, and one without. It’s a powerful, well-established way of quantifying trends, sources and impacts. 2/4
ssteingraber1.bsky.social
Ok but they aren’t “critics” within the scientific community. They are the actual oil industry and the think tanks that work on their behalf. And “linking” refers to source and impact attribution science which quantifies human influence on extreme weather events. 1/4

Ok…some good news in response to bad news. New Yorkers are pushing our governor hard on this:

“New York will challenge a federal judge’s ruling allowing the company tearing down the Indian Point nuclear power plant to discharge radioactive water into the Hudson River”

Patti Smith and Leonard Cohen should be on any list with this title.

Hi, NYC! First time in the Bronx today and just got yelled at for not exiting fast enough at 149th St. 😍

I do have some things to say re: transportation + GHG emissions from NYC’s 1 million buildings.

I never tell anyone how to vote but elections should be informed by science so …happy to be here

Things I learn about my country by reading the foreign press:

🧪Fish need vitamin B1 (thiamine) just like everything else that lives. Turns out they get it from the microbiome of the rivers they swim in so yeah, we’re not going to be living in outer space. Get back to work protecting our only home against the tech bro fantasists.

Indeed. I’ve published a lot of that research myself. It’s nevertheless tough to get people to focus on issues that feel overwhelming because there is nothing they can do as individuals to solve the problem. Most US citizens, even those who care deeply, lack political skill sets to act collectively.

Ok then! Congratulations! The Melancholy of Resistance is now on my reading list. All I know is that it’s a critique of authoritarian ideology involving a whale and circus. Sounds perfect.
